Samsung outstrips iPhone sales to ring up record profit
The Guardian ^ | Friday 27 April 2012 04.28 EDT | Associated Press

A surge in Galaxy smartphone sales fuelled earnings at Samsung Electronics to a record high in the first quarter, usually a tough season for the global consumer electronics industry, outshining handset rivals such as Nokia.

Samsung sold more smartphones in the first three months of the year than Apple and raked in more than 70% of its operating profit from mobile businesses. Shares in Samsung shot up nearly 3%.

Net profit nearly doubled from a year earlier to a record 5.05 trillion won (£2.75bn) for the quarter to 31 March.

Operating profit also hit a record high, at 5.85 trillion won, which was in line with expectations. Sales rose 22% from a year earlier to 45.3tn won.

Strong demand for high-end smartphones, such as the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy S2 introduced last year, helped mask lower profit from memory chips, another Samsung flagship business.

"It was a shock for semiconductor, a surprise for handset," said Lee Ka-keun, a Seoul-based analyst at Hana Daetoo Securities.

The Suwon, Korea-based company expects to outdo its record profit in the coming quarters. It will announce a new version of the Galaxy phone next week and global demand for personal computers is picking up, bringing more cash to memory chip-makers.

-------------------

Samsung's mobile communications division, which includes smartphones, pocketed 4.27tn won of operating profit in the quarter after seeing significant sales growth of high-end smartphones in developing markets including China, a key battlefield for mobile phone makers.

After narrowly beating Apple last year, Samsung's smartphone sales exceeded Apple's by a large margin in the first quarter. Strategy Analytics said Samsung became the world's top smartphone maker, selling 44.5m handsets in the January-March period, followed by Apple's 35.1m.

> Most likely they are reporting total phone sales, including feature and dumb phones not just smartphones, or they are reporting phones "shipped" into distribution channels but not truly sold.

Like most such "So-and-so's sales beat Apple's..." headlines, all one has to do is be patient. The truth always comes out in the end, when the competitor "phases out" their new "iPhone killer" product and drops it from their line. As you point out, the real story is in the profit-and-loss statements from the company's officers, not the bullshit that emerges from the tech press' so-called journalists.

The problem with these headlines is that they use statements made by people who have every reason to lie. They're in the Sales and Marketing departments, not the Finance and Auditing departments, where truth is valued and must be adhered to.

But even though they're paid to prevaricate, these hacks are not stupid. They're basically writing advertising copy, not a term paper. They know that the only headline word/phrase that exceeds "Apple" for eyeball draw, is "Sex Scandal" coupled with the name of a well-known politician. If they could somehow position their new product sales figures press release next to an article about some politician paying for a BJ in a gay bar, or getting caught in a threesome with a whore and a sheep, you know they would.

BTW, no offense or disparagement intended to the S&M individuals personally. They're just doing the job they're paid to do, and I understand that. But we gotta call a spade a spade, or as a buddy used to say, "it's a f*&%@ing shovel".

After almost ten years I think I'm on the right forum.I don't buy Apple because it was founded by Commies

Plus they pitch their stuff to a gay urban "liberal arts major" clientele and the guy who runs Apple is gay. I would be embarrassed if I had to carry an Apple laptop around. Though the iPhone has a better image

I have a Samsung Galaxy II S, the only issue I have with it was the short battery life when I went app crazy at first, so I minimized my app usage.

Its a great phone, its like having a Bugatti that you commute to a construction job on a daily basis. Really, I don’t even use a fraction of its capabilities except for its 4G internet capability when I am out in the field.

No video conferencing, no social clubs, I don’t text. To me its just a phone that does take great pictures. Its so complicated I just gave up trying to figure it out. Kinda odd knowing its so full of tools yet I treat it like a shovel.

“Also I refuse to buy Apple products just on general principles.”

1. I have never owned an Apple product.

2. What are your “general principles” for avoiding Apple?

Mobile technology is still in its infancy, even the "smartphone" and tablet markets. When Apple released the iPad a couple years back, I predicted they would soon sell over a billion of these a year (worldwide) and they are well on their way to doing that.

The numbers we are already seeing with regard to smartphones and tablets is staggering but it is only just beginning. Soon, most people on this Earth will have smartphones and multiple tablets.

By 2015, many people will have a tablet for home, a tablet for work, a tablet for the car (soon to be mounted in dashboard and integrated with car) and another couple extra tablets such as in the bathroom and out on the patio. All these tablets will be linked together through the cloud so as soon as you update a contact, purchase an e-Book or an MP3 music file, all your other devices will be instantly updated so it will be transparent to you what device you are currently using. All your data will by synced.

We are going to see some trillion dollar companies (in terms of market capitalization) within the next decade. Apple, Google and Samsung to be sure. Likely others too.

Any idea/guesses as to when/if Apple will add Swype to their phones?

Issues with my left hand limit function, so I have gotten used to and quite good at using Swype.

My unofficial wild assed guess is never, as an official supported feature of iOS, because the selected characters are not recognized in iOS as selected until the user LIFTS his finger from the touch screen. Sliding away cancels the touch. This results, in test after test, in greater accuracy for text input.

what is so great about the Galaxy?

For me, the big, BIG screen. It's fast, it's bright, and it's readable.

It can also be a bit of a pain, ergonomically speaking - I had the same problem with my first iPhone, it just took some getting used to. The real reason I like it is because I'm an IT geek and I can root it and do whatever I want afterward. Custom ROM, choice of OS; it's pretty nice if you like that sort of thing.

Thank you. My daughter is going to stop by today with her kids and between them they have 3 iPhones... I plan to play with the phones and try to see if I could get used to them.

I guess if I bought an iPhone and hated it, I could always give it to my wife. LOL... and get my Droid back. ;>)

I already have the big 27” iMac, an iPod, and iPod and would like the full set. LOL

ANOTHER QUESTION: Am I going to hate myself for not waiting for the iPhone-5 that ‘could’ come out this summer?????

Perhaps if Apple sent more jobs to China, it would help...

“They’re in the Sales and Marketing departments, not the Finance and Auditing departments, where truth is valued and must be adhered to.”

The suits worn by the CPAs are part of the act.

Do you honestly think they are truthful, after Arthur Andersen, etc? (They were simply the ones that were caught, warning the remainder to be careful, more creative, hide behind new regs/rules/practices)

Reporting companies pay their CPAs millions each year. Do you think they expect to be hassled, or expect to be assisted, for their money?

Deception through Sales/Marketing is really easy, for you deal with the unwashed masses.

Deception through Accounting/Finance is more complicated, complex, for you are dealing with six figure professional crooks (including those in government), with MBAs, JDs and CPAs.

How does GE make billions in profits, and pay no taxes?

“Truth valued and must be adhered to?”

And, BTW, they didn’t invent @#%^, they’re just really good at putting a pretty face on a product somebody else invented. Depending on how you define it smartphones existed for anywhere from 10 to 15 years before the iPhone made em look purty.

That's really strange. The US Patent Office would strongly disagree with you. apple receives upwards of a DOZEN patents weekly. Included in those were patents on the multitouch screen used all smart phones today. Yes, they did not invent the "touchscreen" but, if you look back, you will find they did indeed invent the palm held computer with touch screen capability, called the "personal digital assistant" and in fact coined the name PDA with the Newton, which is the underlying base of the smartphone... And there were Newtons with phone capabilities... Invented by Apple! The Newton was in development before 1990. . . And patented by Apple. Apple has thousands of patents: legitimate patents for real inventions that they have spent billions of dollars developing or purchasing. As for the iPhone, there were smartphones before the iPhone, and there are smartphones after the iPhone. . . and there is a WORLD of differences between the designs and if you can't see the differences you are being deliberately obtuse!

Just because they receive patents on things doesn’t mean they invented the smartphone. Or the GUI OS. Or the PDA (Psion 1984). They might be the first to add widget X to gadget Y, but both the widget and the gadget already existed. Usually what they are is the first one to make gadget Y popular and profitable.

I didn’t say there wasn’t a difference in design, don’t lie about what I said, I simply pointed out that smartphones existed at least a decade before the iPhone so saying Apple invented the market is simply, oh lets use your words, deliberately obtuse.

What good does it do if Apple has created or acquired a bunch of high technology patents - if they turn around and export all the tech manufacturing methods to the Peoples Republic of China.

“American” company my foot.

Ignoring China will not make them go away.

China is taking over everything we once excelled in.

Don’t look away. Open your eyes.

Obsessing on China doesn’t make them go away either. It just makes you the most monotonous one noter on the planet. You say the same thing over and over and over on FR for 7 years. Don’t care, if I had cared before your monotony has made sure I can’t care anymore, you’ve bored the ability to care out of me.

I think you never cared.

If enough Americans don’t care, we’re finished.

“American Idol” right up until we’re gone.

I care.

And I won’t be shushed by someone with an anti-American agenda.

I buy the products that fit my needs. If that’s not made in America that’s not my fault. Don’t watch Idol, don’t have an anti-American agenda. Just happen to know there’s a lot more issues in the world than China, something that apparently it too big a concept for your little mind. We’re done. Further replies will be ignored completely, because I don’t have insomnia and don’t need the sleep.
