Obama criticized in reversal on child farm-labor regulations
Washington Post ^ | April 29, 2012 | By Sam hananel

The Obama administration’s move to scrap a plan that would prevent some children from working in dangerous farm jobs drew sharp rebukes Friday from child-welfare advocates who claim the president caved in to election-year pressure from farmers and Republicans.

The Labor Department spent more than a year working on the proposal to ban children younger than 16 from using power-driven farm equipment — including tractors — and prevent those under 18 from working in grain silos, feed lots and stockyards.

The goal was to protect children, who are four times more likely to be killed while performing farm work than those in all other industries combined.

But the proposal was routinely mocked in rural states such as Kansas and Montana, where farmers often have their kids do chores that can include operating heavy equipment.

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) said the government should not shirk its duty to keep working children safe.

“I am disappointed that the administration chose to walk away from regulations that were, at their core, about protecting children and which could have been revised to correct some of the initial proposals that generated the most concern,” Harkin said.

Obama back-peddled when he found out if child labor laws applied to families he couldn't send his daughters out hustling the streets for winos and bums to vote for him.

A whole lot more than have been killed by farm equipment.

I grew up in a very rural, farming community. Only kid I know of that was killed in that sort of an accident was 18 or 19, was logging (by himself, stupid) and dropped a tree on himself.

I do know of plenty of adults that have had mishaps with equipment, though.

Good point. Children have been working on family farms in the U.S. since the Pilgrims set foot on the shores...the government needs to BUTT out. This is NOT about the welfare of the children it's about control of the children, their families, the food supply, etc. The reversal, although IMO it will be short-lived, is most welcome. Morons.

IMO its about controlling the food supply. Killing family farms is an important step in that direction.

Of the 16 children under the age of 16 who died from work-related injuries in 2010, 12 were in agriculture, according to Human Rights Watch.

All this excessive regulation over 12 accidental deaths. How many "youts" have died from crime and gang activities?

The government first creates a (non)problem and then attempts to solve it because it's safer and easier than dealing with real urban dysfunction.

They don’t want to deal with urban problems. They want everyone to move to urban areas.

Arrrgggghhh... Figures lie and liars figure: kids are 1,000 times more likely to be working on a farm than in all other "industries" except fast food. And the only way you get killed at McDOnald's is if one of Holder's people somebody robs the place and shoots everybody.

One of my high school friends was killed in a farm accident. I got his job and the first thing the farmer said was “Don’t do what Scott did” and he was right.

He climbed under the bucket of a front end loader full of rocks just for a second and that’s all it took.

Same here, I grew up in a farm community in North Dakota and knew only 1 kid under 18 that ever got hurt working on a farm.. However, there were a few adults that killed because they cut corners.

That's almost certainly half the story, at best. As is usual in this situation, the full truth would include the number of deaths per "industry" and a number of all children employed.

The Post drags on anecdotes. They are meaningless. What about stories of peopel on farms who have died because of government excess in regulatory overkill? That’s what we need. The Post, as usual, is promoting government expansion uber alles. I’m sick of those GD Commies at the Post.

Letting kids work with their dads/ be with their dads/ learn from their dads — this makes for strong men. Metrosexuals/ liberals/ Marxists do not like strong men, they do not like strong families, and they do not like independent folks who do for themselves.

Don’t mess with my kids, bucko (President Bucko, that is).

12?! More kids probably die/are injured in bicycle accidents each week than in all the farm accidents each year combined? Are they going to take away bicycles?

Like I said before, they backed off because they would have had no way to enforce it and trying to would have been a nightmare. County sheriffs would have started arresting federal labor dept. agents for trespassing or other charges. Sheriffs in metropolitan areas (such as NYC, Chicago, Detroit, etc.) might have enforced it IF there were any farms to police, but in rural areas where the sheriff is part of the community (not the mob) and elected, I doubt seriously that any cooperation would have been given. Sheriffs have been known to make life for federals very miserable!

“Were we directed by Washington when to sow and when to reap, we should soon want for bread.” Jefferson had it pegged.

The Urban Americans must no longer be allowed to direct the lives of the non-urban Americans.
