Seriously, you think making Romney President and head of thr GOP is going to empower conservatives?

You've stated what I've been thinking. Multiple things about Romney's time in Massachusetts could be opportunism instead of liberalism. For instance, Romneycare got, I believe, many hundreds of millions of dollars from the US government for the Massachusetts government. It's not too unlike the State of Illinois agreeing to high-speed rail to get similar amounts of money, ostensibly to grow its coffers at the expense of every other state.

Unfortunately, we can't really know if he's just an opportunist or a hard-core liberal. And as you describe, that's at least slightly better than Obama.

As you said, it's hard to be a Republican. But it's even harder when you spit on the base and then turn around and demand they follow your unpopular squish of a candidate into the breach. ...

... and, if you decline, they are arrogantly derisive, scolding you that you're acting like a little child having a temper tantrum, and if you happen to mention that your Christian values make Romney taboo because he's been an active agent in expanding both abortion and the gay agenda, they shriek that you're a hypocrite and a Mormon-hater.

Oh, yeah, for sure though, if they win due to conservatives' votes, they're going to treat conservatives in the party real nice once Romney's in the White House. *rolls eyes*

If Obama wins it will be 100% Communist, 100% of the time...

If it was that certain and that easy, why hasn't he done it already?

The sky is falling!!!!!!!

I will be keeping my eyes on Romney ... and if he even LOOKS left, he will lose my vote forever, and the country be damned.

LOL, sounds like a bad case of "battered conservative" syndrome. Giving ol' Mittsky just ONE more chance, eh? Even after he just flunked on the auto bailout and student loan subsidy issues last week? He hasn't done anything to earn my vote so he won't get it. Neither has Obama of course. I am not voting on the basis of "anybody but Obama." That's fundamentally flawed logic because it would apply if Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Achmedinajad, the Ayatollah, or Kim-Jong Il were on the ticket too.

If anything, maybe FR should ban discussions of Romney altogether. Because the only useful thing we can do now is to help elect conservatives in Congress and regional races. This endless discussion of Mitt is not being productive at all. And no matter who wins the presidency, we will NEED a conservative Congress to block them when they go left. With Romney, though, we'll need far more conservatives elected. We realistically couldn't possibly get a big enough majority this year to counteract all the RINOs and cowardly "team players" who will rubber stamp whatever he does. The conservative movement has a better shot of thriving under a second Obama term than a Romney term. Obama would give us a huge win in the next mid-terms while Romney would likely give us a loss of indeterminate proportions.

Our energies must be directed at the enemy and not at each other.

Romney is and always has been the enemy of the Tea Party. He is the Trojan Horse sent by the GOP-E to destroy the Tea Party and all that we stand for. The GOP-E is the enemy.

We, as constitutional conservatives and patriots must either take over the GOP (which is unlikely as they are so deeply entrenched) or the Tea Party must make a clean break from that organization. They are currently a wholly owned subsidiary of the Tarp Recipients and the Crony Corporatists.

Fight on. Certainly we must no not fight the true constitutional conservatives, but we must continue the war against the establishment GOP. They are neither conservatives nor constitutionalists. They are Corporatists and they have purchased whatever power they now wield.

Never give up.

Never Surrender.

Jim,

I will vote for Romney in the distant hope he is the lesser of two evils. Your editorial is spot on. A house divided against itself cannot stand and we must continue in every way possible vote to for and support true conservative candidates.

I respect your position to not vote for Romney. We CAN still be heard and be a force that helps turn our country around. It may take longer than we want. But this is a war as well, and we need to be in it for the long haul.

God Bless You, sir, for all you do for this Free Republic!

Maybe we disagree and that is okay. But this is not a breathless obituary. I am sure FR is not going anywhere anytime soon. It will continue to exist in some form. However, the wounds are deep and the scars will be permanent in that so many long-time posters are now gone. Posters with sign-up dates of 1998, even 1997, have been culled from the herd. Some have been among the most insightful posters FR ever had and perhaps ever will.

In my view, the most harmful participants are those who gang up and encircle a person, drive them to the ground and then claim they failed the purity test of the moment. All while professing to speak on behalf of the owner.

This nails it. We lost some terrific folks who made this board a much better place. I am very disappointed, but not surprised, that Romney is the presumptive nominee. Most of those who voluntarily left or were banned when everyone was angry felt the same way.

Jim - emotion aside, my wife said I was miserable for weeks when Romney seemed inevitable, you must answer this question to lay down the rules once and for all.

Do you truly believe in your heart that Mitt Romney will be as destructive and dangerous to this nation as Barack Obama?

I believe for many of us that is the question that needs to be answered and I know it will be a difficult question for you to answer.

I am going to go out and work on the garden because I believe my family will need it regardless of who POTUS is. Like someone said earlier, one of two unpalatable choices might give my orchard a little more time to become productive!

And then what do they do? They send sappy, glittering pictures to one another with expressions of friendship.

Amen Lando - Amen! Reading this thread just makes me mad all over again. Truce? Yeah, right. I hope the bully cliques enjoy their echo chamber.

As long as they are allowed (or tacitly encouraged) to spew their name-calling, insults and judgmental hatred, this site will continue to fade from prominence. It's very sad what has happened here.

And the Pizza Huts HERE have Tuna, mayo, octopus, Corn, Potato, ...

I love anchovies on pizza but the thought of those things as toppings just makes me shudder. And I can eat mayo right out of the jar.
