If you’d really like to depress yourself some evening, watch “Doomsday Preppers” on the National Geographic Channel. The show details the plans of normal, well adjusted people to cope with the aftermath of fiscal collapse, nuclear holocaust, the eruption of Yellowstone, solar flares, and so on.
The New York Times noted with outrage that many of these people were accumulating guns and ammunition in order to defend their 1,500 pounds of MREs and dried brown rice, but stockpiling guns is fine with me. My concern is that most of them seem pretty inexpert with guns. One prepper was counting on a Ruger Number One single-shot which, despite its many splendid qualities, is not what you’d pick to blast the mob at your door. Another managed to shoot off several fingers during a practice session. Yet a third, a resident of the Oligarchy of Bloomberg, took lessons in knife fighting because he was unable to get a gun, ignoring the fact that everyone in the Oligarchy of Bloomberg who wants a gun has one, or several, and when the pistol-waving mob comes to this fellow’s apartment I don’t think that he and his knife will last long.

By the way, I saw the one program where the guy blew the end of his thumb off. He put it in front of the muzzle when it “misfired”. Uh huh. I’d like to slap that guy. He lives some where south of us in Phoenix.
That is done to make their "experts," who come on at the end of the show and say that whatever they were prepping for is statistically never going to happen, that much more believable. The unwashed masses can then flip back to Dancing With The Stars with nothing to worry about.
I’ve only seen one episode of that series, but in that episode the expert analysts provided recommendations on the completeness of each person’s preparations and offered recommendations for improvement. One guy carried a backpack full of basic supplies, and planned to live on the natural vegetation that grew around the drainage canals in Los Angeles. The experts at the end of that segment said “You should think about carrying a gun for self defense.” I thought the show was going to be all about “Let’s make fun of all the wackaloon survivalists,” but that one recommendation changed my mind. If they’re going to be serious about the topic, then maybe the show is worth watching.
I have a few basic “hunker down” supplies, and I’m right on the edge of joining up with a group of like-minded folks who would band together in a defensible location during a SHTF scenario. The main problem I see in the Phoenix area is trying to defend your position and your supplies from a million starving fellow citizens. The Zombie Apocalypse isn’t quite the same when you are facing an emaciated family with a couple of kids, or maybe an infant.

The other thing, if you can, get a bug out house in a way rural area. Also, in a prior comment, don’t advertise what you are doing.

I thought the entire purpose of the show was to make fun of people who might be taking prudent steps to handle a major earthquake, hurricane, economic troubles, etc.
Conversation among the family was about bug in vs. bug out. My home is completely indefensible - low ground, dense woods, etc. So this is an ongoing discussion and we will bug out.
I laid the law down to my one (liberal) daughter. If you want to bug out, don’t come to my house empty-handed. I will not share.
Someone else will become the most prepared.

I’ve seen maybe a half dozen episodes and don’t care to waste my time watching another.
The guy you described above wouldn’t last 5 minutes in a real crisis, especially in Los Angeles. Does he really think he’s going to defend himself with his stone arrowheads and pocketknives from a gang of Mexican Zombies? Ha!
Sounds to me like you’re doing the right thing by aligning yourself with “like-minded” folks.

It’s people like you that give preppers a bad name.
Being a liberal, she can be like Julia and wait for the government to help. When she changes her outlook on life and takes responsibility for her actions, I will help. But, as in the tale of the ant and the grasshopper, if you play all summer, I can’t feed you in the winter.
If that makes me a bad person, so be it. I will not starve those in my house already to feed a slacker. It will be survival of the fittest.

During World War Two the local ration boards were on the lookout for hoarders & relied on snitches. Citizens suspected of hoarding rationed goods were summoned to appear before the board. This was backed up by local police. Confiscations were rare but not unheard of.
Now.... who in these times will even utter a peep about what they have, especially weapons, if they’ve got their sense? Seems that mum’s the word if you want to be safe.
There’s someone around who tells a tale of his family’s main food supply being cleaned-out in this manner ... they only survived because they had part of their food supply hidden somewhere else.

What's prepping? (ahem)
I couldn't do that to one of my children despite their political or other foolish views.
Instead, I quietly prep for them now as well, not even sure if they will ultimately arrive. If they don't, then I have the increased ability to help others whom I deem need and deserve it.
But I figure it is likely these family will show up with their hat in hand when/if the SHTF. They will get my help then if they need it - but only if they agree beforehand to follow my rules and be a part of my team and not a sponge. If they refuse the deal, then they have made their choice to leave and seek help elsewhere. If they stay, they can expect no free lunches or preferential treatment and we will work together to make it through.
It is my view any Liberal-minded (or not properly prepped) family members who might make it to my door will change their views mighty quickly when the rubber hits the road and the cold reality of hunger and danger arrives at their door and their comfy bubbles are burst by genuine events. They certainly already will be at that point if they manage to arrive at my door. So, I prepare for them to join us and help us all survive together. After all, there is strength in numbers.
In the Bible, the man forgave his Prodigal Son when he finally left his squandering and foolishness and returned home. I think this is likely to be the case with a lot of folks if the SHTF.
I would rather accept the burden of extra prepping now (foolish old dad!) and hope for reconciliation with others in my family when the time comes rather than turn them away to certain disaster and perhaps an awful end. I would have a hard time living with my conscience for doing so just because of their current foolishness.
