Solar panel demand down nearly 90% following subsidy cut
UK Guardian ^ | May 1, 2012 | Damian Cardigan

Solar panel installations have fallen by almost 90% in the weeks since the government halved cut the subsidy available, according to Department of Energy and Climate Change figures.

The new data lends support to the charge of some in the solar industry that the government cut the subsidy too far and too fast, endangering thousands of jobs. Ministers have defended their actions, saying the scheme they inherited from the previous government was poorly set up and was too costly for the energy customers who ultimately foot the bill.

It is nothing more than a political money laundering scheme.

Pray for America

Unexpected.

Yeah, as usual.

Solar panel installations have fallen by almost 90% in the weeks since the government halved cut the subsidy available...

Now, to bring sales back up (if possible) the product must become more competitive (lower price).

The government subsidy has artificially kept the price higher than the market would allow, and the debt and taxes extracted to keep the price artificially high has suppressed the entire economy somewhat.

We can, if we try, subsidize ourselves into absolute poverty.

What do they expect when a government starts an “industry” based on corporate welfare from the start.

Who would buy a solar panel in the UK under any circumstance?

In my dreams:

Chevy Volt sales drop a further 80% due to end of taxpayer subsidy.

You would think that people would put solar panel farms in places like the U.S. Southwest where the sun shines bright nearly year around. You would be wrong.

Here in northern IL, Winnebago county is dithering over a solar panel farm to be built on acreage south of the airport. (It just happens we have a Chinese manufacturer of solar panels within a few miles of the proposed farm.) No one seems to have asked whether this “green energy” project will deliver any kind of usable power or even how much over the period of a year. No one has asked, since there's a nuclear power plant within 10 miles, why we are even considering this!

My guess is the people who are pushing this are the construction and electrical unions, solar panel manufacturer, and local politicians. It makes ZERO sense.

The funny part is solar panel subsidies really favor the wealthy... Less wealthy people can’t afford to buy solar systems even with subsidies. But they get to pay taxes to subsidize wealthy people buying solar systems to lower their bills...

Driving around I saw lots of shop fronts with the word “solar” in their names.

Looking closer, they were all tanning salons...:^)

"My guess is the people who are pushing this"

The Illinois renewable portfolio standard is 25% by 2025 and that is mainly wind, but they do have 6% PV solar by 2015.

So then you have to ask if those are going to be Chinese panels, or european, or US.

You mean subsidies create false demand?

Who knew?

Uhm, wouldn't it lend more support to critics of solar who say its too expensive and noone would buy it without a government handout?

I have - an array of fourteen, in fact, been in about 8 months now. At the moment churning out about 23kwh per day - a pretty healthy contribution to the household energy demands, I can assure you. Even in mid-winter there was a respectable output - they're actually at their most efficient in strong winter sun but cold air.

The myths of sunless, foggy Britain - for which we have Dickens as much as anybody to blame - die hard.

Not going to happen. The Donkeys will have killed the state by then. We’re in the process of copying California on the road to oblivion.
