Last year, Wisconsin became the 49th state to allow residents to carry concealed weapons. Although there may be comfort in numbers, I personally don't feel more comfortable - or secure - knowing this law is on the books. Also, recent news stories have only added to my discomfort.
On April 20, the state Department of Justice announced that it had issued its 100,000th concealed-carry permit and Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen offered that it would be not surprising if total permits exceed 125,000.
That means a lot of folks will be carrying concealed weapons in all sorts of places. Sure, the law bars certain groups, such as convicted felons, from obtaining permits and generally allows businesses to prohibit concealed weapons on their premises. However, the restrictions don't go nearly far enough.
The problem is that too many things in too many places can go wrong, and the consequences may, well, be fatal.
Perhaps most disturbing is that the law does not mandate adequate training. As Journal Sentinel editorial writer and columnist James E. Causey reported in an April 15 column, those seeking permits are only required to take a two-hour firearm safety course and no part of it mandates hands-on instruction, much less spending time at a gun range to practice.

What I always find amusing while discussing this with avid, anti-gun, anti-CCW bigots, is the look on their face when you explain that for the last 15 minutes they have been standing next to at least 3 others who were legally carrying.
Well, if the writer doesn’t feel comfortable carrying a firearm, maybe they should invest in body armor...about the same price as a reasonably good used pistol and enough ammo to become proficient.
Yep, Wisconsonites are ignoring that part of the 2A that says, "the right to keep and bear arms with adequate training".

While it is true he’d fired weapons as a boy, he didn’t receive any training from the people pushing him to the slaughter.
No one, at least on the Russian side, was afraid of him carrying his weapon anywhere in the city. No one in America should be afraid of an honest, law abidign citizen carrying a weapon to protect himself and others from criminals who the police cannot control.

You should reconsider that opinion, Jay. You will not find a safer, more law abiding group than those who hold CPLs.
