Last year, Wisconsin became the 49th state to allow residents to carry concealed weapons. Although there may be comfort in numbers, I personally don't feel more comfortable - or secure - knowing this law is on the books. Also, recent news stories have only added to my discomfort.
On April 20, the state Department of Justice announced that it had issued its 100,000th concealed-carry permit and Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen offered that it would be not surprising if total permits exceed 125,000.
That means a lot of folks will be carrying concealed weapons in all sorts of places. Sure, the law bars certain groups, such as convicted felons, from obtaining permits and generally allows businesses to prohibit concealed weapons on their premises. However, the restrictions don't go nearly far enough.
The problem is that too many things in too many places can go wrong, and the consequences may, well, be fatal.
Perhaps most disturbing is that the law does not mandate adequate training. As Journal Sentinel editorial writer and columnist James E. Causey reported in an April 15 column, those seeking permits are only required to take a two-hour firearm safety course and no part of it mandates hands-on instruction, much less spending time at a gun range to practice.

Ordinary civilians are much safer without them.
Oh my! The Helots, (Citizens), are arming themselves against our thugs. We’ll have to do something to get it back to the way it was.
Liberals and most journalist, excuse me I just repeated myself, just irritate the heck out of me with their “well-thought-out” policies and attitudes.
So this Jerk doesn’t feel comfortable——give him a pity party.
Many thousands do feel comfortable jerk, What makes your comfort more special than theirs.
Theirs is a 2nd. Amendment right. If you don’t like it there are places where it is not a right.
What I always find amusing while discussing this with avid, anti-gun, anti-CCW bigots, is the look on their face when you explain that for the last 15 minutes they have been standing next to at least 3 others who were legally carrying.
Well, if the writer doesn’t feel comfortable carrying a firearm, maybe they should invest in body armor...about the same price as a reasonably good used pistol and enough ammo to become proficient.
Yep, Wisconsonites are ignoring that part of the 2A that says, "the right to keep and bear arms with adequate training".
Shame on them.
Jay Miller is a confused person who wets his bed at the thought that law-abiding citizens are ‘permitted’ to exercise their rights.
Hey, Jason—how many gunfights are erupting around you these days?
I’m sure a big shootout will occur any day now, started by all these law-abiding citizens.
You better go cower in the corner and suck your thumb..........
After crossing the Volga river with thousands of other conscripted volunteers, Vasily Zaytsev was given some bullets and told to pick a rifle from the comrade in front of him if he fell in battle.
While it is true he’d fired weapons as a boy, he didn’t receive any training from the people pushing him to the slaughter.
No one, at least on the Russian side, was afraid of him carrying his weapon anywhere in the city. No one in America should be afraid of an honest, law abidign citizen carrying a weapon to protect himself and others from criminals who the police cannot control.
It's always FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELINGS with these numbskulls. Not one iota of fact anywhere.
Does he feeeeeeeel uncomfortable about wearing a seat belt in his car? Does he feeeeeeel uncomfortable with the fire extinguisher in his kitchen?
IMHO, ccw is no different.
You should reconsider that opinion, Jay. You will not find a safer, more law abiding group than those who hold CPLs.
The flaw is between the ears of the person who wrote the article.
I am one of the over 100,000 licensed to carry concealed and I go to the range regularly.
Statement from Chris W. Cox on
Richard Mourdock’s Significant Win in the
Indiana U.S. Senate Primary Election
Thanks to your votes, Richard Mourdock has won the Republican primary election for U.S. Senate in Indiana defeating 36-year incumbent, Sen. Richard Lugar. Since the 1990s, Sen. Lugar has become notorious for his zealous support of gun control schemes and his fervent anti-gun positions.
Your NRA was fully vested in this race with a comprehensive campaign that encompassed thousands of radio and television ads in the months before the today’s primary election. This effort also included 600,000 web ads. The media campaign was also supplemented by a concentrated advocacy and get-out-the-vote phone and mail program. All in all, nearly 500,000 phone calls were made and nearly 700,000 pieces of mail were sent in this remarkable victory for freedom.
Together we made a difference in this race. But, as always, what mattered most in this race was your vote. Thanks to Indiana gun owners, one of the most anti-gun Senators will no longer be in the U.S. Senate. You can find more information at: http://www.nrapvf.org/elect-mourdock.aspx.
So very true.
Nazi Germany used the Census to identify and disarm the Jewish people so they couldn't resist the "Final Solution."
48 other states have managed this without horrible consequences, why does he think the people of Wisconsin are less capable? Maybe he should move to Illinois and root for the Bears....
