Evangelicals: Mitt Romney hit right note

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Evangelical leaders praised Mitt Romney’s speech today at Liberty University, saying that the Mormon candidate was right to acknowledge his religious differences with other Christian voters.

“It was an acknowledgment that the issues that social conservatives and evangelicals care about are important issues to Gov. Romney and as he sees them [as] part of a successful economic platform for the country,” said Family Research Council President Tony Perkins.

Perkins added that there wasn’t anything the presumptive GOP presidential nominee — who many evangelical voters regarded with skepticism during the primary while backing Rick Santorum — should have done differently. And he pointed to the huge opportunity created for Romney by President Barack Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage this week (Romney opposes gay marriage).

“I think he touched on the key issues that are important to social conservatives. He mentioned Rick Santorum and Rick’s emphasis and the need to have the family and the ties to economic success.” (See also: 10 essential facts about Liberty U.)

Regarding Romney’s acknowledgement that Mormonism differs from other Christian faiths in certain ways, Perkins said the candidate was correct to tackle the issue.

“That was what he needed to do, was to acknowledge that there are theological differences between him and evangelicals,” Perkins said.

Sure does SAY the right things now that he’s a reborn again hard as nails Reagan conservative running for president. ROFLOL!!

Sure does say the right things to win governorship in one of the most liberal (gay friendly) states in the union when he is a newborn socialist liberal.

“many evangelical voters regarded with skepticism” I have a feeling Obama’s “coming out party” this week changed that situation.

Oversimplification, but most “evangelicals” are simply the GOP at prayer while most liberal churches are the DemocRATS at navel-gazing.

Well, you know JimRob, I have never said and would never say that Romney is anything other than a cynical shape-shifter whose true agenda is known only to his innermost circle of co-religionists.

I’m just opining that he’s getting good at it.

The man is to the left of Bill Clinton.

And he cannot defeat an incumbent who is left of Bill Clinton.

I agree with you. Obama is working to destroy the country by destroying the family unit. America must return to the “culture” of the family headed by a mother and a father. The destruction of the American family by secular, liberal Democrats cannot be allowed to accomplish its evil task. These “dirt bag” politicians, Obama included, have destoyed the American Black family unit, have embraced the Gay Community life style, and have made millions dependent on government handouts to survive. No nation can endure for long with these conditions. Romney is right on!!! ABO = Anybody but Obama!!!

And to think I never have given his religion an effort of concern.

I couldn't care less.

I still won't vote for him because he is a lying socialist liberal snake!

The beginning of the end of the GOP.

Without principle of conviction no political entity can maintain power in a free nation.

Agreed. I think republicans are being set up to be demoralized as the election nears. All of a sudden the polls tell them what they want to hear and they're treated as accurate. In 04, I and others were bumping all the polls for John Kerry just because it allowed the democrats to become overconfident.

Yes, Romney always does a great job telling people what they want to hear.....then he will speak to a different audience the next day, and do a 180. It’s his thing. And people fall for it. Over....and over....and over.....

Pope John II believed that he knew (not "who" was christian) but that Mormonism is not a Christian religion.
