'Bass guitarist Donald "Duck" Dunn, who played with Booker T and the MGs, has died in Tokyo aged 70.
The MGs were the house band for Stax Records, and Dunn can be heard on songs such as Otis Redding's Respect and Sam and Dave's Hold On, I'm Comin'.
He was in Japan for a series of concerts, and had played two shows on Saturday night.
His friend and fellow musician Steve Cropper, who was on the same tour, said Dunn had died in his sleep.
"Today I lost my best friend," Cropper wrote on his Facebook page. "The World has lost the best guy and bass player to ever live".'

RIP, Duck...
Oh No! I am really saddened by this. Duck Dunn was a favorite of mine. He was responsible for the bass line in “Midnight Hour” and was one of the Original Blues Brothers.
As a Bass Player, I patterned a lo9t of my riffs after Duck Dunn. He had a great style and is an icon among Bass players.
RIP, Brother.
A serious loss to the music world.
Bummer....
RIP..
One of my favorite line....
“We had a band powerful enough to turn goat piss into gasoline”
LOL.
Thats the first line that came into my head tonight as well.
Green Onions baby!
He and Cropper and the rest achieved greatness by practicing restraint - a concept that is all but dead in today’s music.
This is not an oldies fan grumping about the whippersnappers; this is a musician who has seen styles come and go and knows what endures.
Time is Tight!
