Whites Account for Under Half of Births in U.S. By SABRINA TAVERNISE May 17, 2012

WASHINGTON — After years of speculation, estimates and projections, the Census Bureau has made it official: White births are no longer a majority in the United States.

Non-Hispanic whites accounted for 49.6 percent of all births in the 12-month period that ended last July, according to Census Bureau data made public on Thursday, while minorities — including Hispanics, blacks, Asians and those of mixed race — reached 50.4 percent, representing a majority for the first time in the country’s history.

Such a turn has been long expected, but no one was certain when the moment would arrive — signaling a milestone for a nation whose government was founded by white Europeans and has wrestled mightily with issues of race, from the days of slavery, through a civil war, bitter civil rights battles and, most recently, highly charged debates over efforts to restrict immigration.

While over all, whites will remain a majority for some time, the fact that a younger generation is being born in which minorities are the majority has broad implications for the country’s economy, its political life and its identity. “This is an important tipping point,” said William H. Frey, the senior demographer at the Brookings Institution, describing the shift as a “transformation from a mostly white baby boomer culture to the more globalized multiethnic country that we are becoming.”

I heard some liberal talking once, lamenting that Christian conservatives, Orthodox Jews, and other people of faith, tend to have more children than liberal types. I think this liberal feared the political repercussions of so many conservative leaning people having more children.

This person also thinks that religion is a form of brainwashing, and fears that all these kids will vote in lockstep with parents, never think for themselves, etc.

Maybe at the root of liberal angst is that they want political power above all else. They fear being outnumbered/outvoted.

Liberal thinking is, when nobody is a majority, we will all hold hands and sing “Kumbaya”.

Reality is that in neighborhoods throughly mixed among people of different races and cultures, people become suspicious and far less likely to help their neighbor.

Once again, liberal utopian dreams meet the nightmare of unexpected consequences.

Balkanization is baked into the cake.

I worked in San Francisco for 12 years. We had people from cultures the world over at work. The good news is that we all worked together from common ground.

The bad news is, when it came time to eat or hang, it was always, the white guys with the white guys, the middle easter guys with the middle eastern guys, the asians with asians, the blacks with blacks, the east Indians with east Indians, the women with women (generally by race/region/nationality as with guys above.

The human race is naturally self segregating. It is just human nature.

I pray I won’t be around when to see our balkanization. I really do.

The blacks are going to be the losers in this mix. They will go from having a non-hispanic white majority to having a hispanic white majority. Six two and even the hispanics don’t play nice with them the way the old Christian white guys did when hispanics become the dominate political power block.

The Christian faith is the only serious force for friendly ethnic integration that the world has seen. But even that, properly viewed, is a private affair, subject to ups and downs. It is fortunate that most of America identified itself nominally with Christianity as long as it has, but the bible foretells days when much faith will grow cold and it seems that this is happening now. So hello again Balkanization.

We just shared The LORD with two really nice Hispanics today. They loved us and we loved them. One of them offered that if we ever come to their area of the Country that we can stay with him and his family any time. We witness to people of all cultures and find that Christ truly does break down barriers.

I could not care less about a persons skin color. I care about their conscience and their morals, and if they live by the golden rule and are an upstanding citizen. So that is not the issue.

I don’t believe all cultures are equal, that is all. Many hispanics are fine, but then we wouldn’t have the severe gang problem we have today if they hadn’t imported it.

So it is not about skin color per se, theoretically. It is just human nature to self-segregate and to balkanize.

It was bad enough when Christians hated jews, and everyone else hated the Irish and the Italians. Irish need not apply was the law of the land in many places for a long time.

It is just now that we are fractured along racial and cultural lines, our balkanization is certain and will come rapidly. It’s really sad. Our nation was a melting pot. Now it is just a mix and the mixing isn’t very well done. Too much oil and water in the mix. Neither is inherently bad, but oil and water don’t mix so you get guarnteed separation.

That is the future of America. Guaranteed separation. The commie libs thought that when we were well mixed with every combination under the sun, we would have a homogeneous mixture all acting color blind. This will never happen. Instead we are going to fracture into a dozen camps.

It’s really sad what they have done to this once more or less unified nation. But how do you conquer if you don’t first divide?

If you regionalize this dynamic, I`m betting the numbers are far more shocking. I suspect white births in the Southwest are hugely outpaced by hispanics. How about Arab births in the upper Midwest? That can`t be an encouraging development either.

>> It really wouldn’t matter what color or race people were, if they solidly believed the Bible.

Amen. Believed in the Bible, that is, AS WELL AS practiced what is in it. Doers, not just hearers.

Your profound statement is at the very heart of whether this great country can remain great — or not.

the sky is falling! THE SKY IS FALLING!

oh wait: they are talking about me and my family.

My family members include folks who are mixtures of Irish /Italian/ Colombian Hispanic/ Guatamalan Hispanic/ WASP/ Norewegian/ Filipinos and Japanese, not to mention the one who is a hillbilly who claims she is part Cherokee despite being a blue eyed blond.

But under affirmative action, only the Blond Cherokee counts, I guess.

It is just human nature to self-segregate and to balkanize.

Yes, and no. Sure, we live next to those who are likely to understand us. But until the advent of hyphenating our national affiliation, we were all Americans.

It is the ______-American who has not placed this country first.

We used to be Americans of ________ ancestry, but American was the foremost and key word.

Subtle? Perhaps, but that subtle change in mindset which placed the divisions ahead of the unifying factor has taken its toll.

I’ll tell you that white births in the northeast are hugely outpaced by Hispanics; the government will never honestly tell us how badly skewed the birthrate is now. Remember they said blacks might be outnumbered by Hispanics in 2010? In 2002 they announced that it had already happened...in 2000.

If they were honest about what was happening whites would demand action similar to what BJ Clinton had done in 1996 with the welfare reform re-election ploy: stop giving money to people to breed recklessly. It dropped the urban black birth rate significantly. Whites are taxed to death (to the point where they feel one or two children at most is what they can afford, if any), while those taxes are funding millions of anchor babies and others that are bred simply to qualify for government housing, food stamps, etc. There is little parenting taking place, simply breeding.

What is distressing about this is that the American people have never favored open immigration and an exchange of populations. The demographic transformation, whatever its eventual cultual and political outcomes, has been engineered by political elites angling for power, and at every moment of decision has been driven against majority popular opinion.

Since we are about to become a majority minority country, we have just once chance to get it right or we'll balkanize. We need to commit to race neutrality and treating people as individuals, period. But the race hustlers oppose that, so we are probably headed towards generations of conflict. Sad.

The females do as well; that is why they are 60% of our college students. More divide & conquer...

Ehh, Texas has been a minority-majority state for several years, and Hispanics are within a few years of passing up whites here, and the Democrats have been doing everything they can to take advantage of it.

Thankfully the Democrats have been idiots, but unfortunately with a few decades of liberals from California, New England, and Florida moving in, things aren't looking good. 5 out of the 6 largest cities went for Obama, and the 6th was mighty close.

Normally, I wouldn't have a problem with the transformation - it was going to happen. This country is built upon thousands of years of God knows how many American Indian tribes shoving each other aside, then Anglos shoving the American Indians aside, now other groups are shoving them aside. Hell, my ancestors were Spaniards who came to the Americas nearly 500 years ago.

What I have a problem with is the Republicans and Democrats who don't want to deal with the issues of illegal immigration, and in fact want to accelerate and encourage it with "guest worker" programs and amnesty.

Look at George W. Bush - he was pushing a guest worker program not long after Texas had become a minority-majority state. I found that very odd.

I also have a problem with the fact that Republicans aren't making serious attempts at connecting with Hispanics. Many Hispanics are a lot more conservative than people think, but the Republicans seem intent on just giving up to the Democrats.

Whites have been postponing having more children during the Great Recession and will likely see a spurt of births in a real recovery (not the phony we now have.) Young people are also postponing marriage for the same reason — and marriages will surge and so will babies.
