The Maryland General Assembly passed a $260 million tax increase Wednesday as it adjourned from a three-day special session that ended with Gov. Martin O'Malley saying he will bring lawmakers back for another session this summer.

The House gave final approval to two bills that will raise income taxes and shift a portion of teacher pension costs to counties to balance the state’s $35.5 billion budget, which is nearly $1 billion larger than last year’s spending plan.

A good first attempt by the Democrat Socialists in Maryland to bring their state down economically ... but they still have a way to go to catch up with the Democrat Socialists in California who have developed the practice of hurting their citizens into a fine art.

Per Fox this morning, they are raising taxes on the “rich” making 4100K or more and couples making $150K or more. Looks like the “rich” are getting poorer instead of richer. One guy even wondered if Obama will revise “rich” from $250K down to $100K if given a second term...

Lawmakers voted 77-60 in favor of a bill that will raise income-tax rates and lower the value of personal exemptions for single residents making more than $100,000 and couples making more than $150,000.

Wow that's aggressive.

Oddly enough, this bill screws liberals more than conservatives. Liberals are more likely to have two spouses working. It’s pretty easy to get to that 150K level with both spouses having cushy Federal jobs. Conservatives are more likely to have the wife not working or working part time.

It’s not a 260M tax hike...it’s 260M PLUS the increased county taxes where you live to cover the shift of the teacher pension costs.

Basically the legislature just enabled O’Malley’s theft of previously paid tax dollars that was supposed to go to teacher’s pensions.

You folks are missing the real killer, here:

shift a portion of teacher pension costs to counties

And how, pray tell, will the counties pay for these teacher pension costs?

Why, they'll have to increase their income taxes.

Yes, folks: Maryland counties have an income tax, of approximately 3% of one's state income tax. Watch that rate go up over the next couple of years ... on everybody.

How convenient ... State government can claim it "only" raised taxes on "the rich" while brushing the county tax increases under the rug.

DemocRats are liars.

Maryland has nothing but contempt and scorn for private enterprise. Manufacturing was forced out long ago.

Delicious irony, the overwhelming majority of those facing the income tax hike will be govt employees, unions, medicine, and academia. These are the hard core of the left in this Marxist hellhole, and MD’s sole substantial industry.

Let that obscene belt of faux wealth girdling DC take a hit. Chickens, come to roost. Eff this place.

Sorry for the rant.
