A pound of brown rice has 1600 calories and most beans are 700-900 calories/#. Add some salt and other seasonings along with a bit of meat and veggies, and vitamin tablets; and a person could eat pretty well on $2-3/day. Not saying it would be fun, but it would be healthy.

Five years on a welfare program ? Did she have no plan for EVER becoming self-sufficient ? Of course not. She had no qualms about being a leech for the rest of her life.
Don’t know her situation, but 5 years of depoendence is a bit overboard - one must wonder what kind of “sacrifices” she has made to better her and her kids’ situation. With far too many, food stamps is a convenience so they can afford other conveniences, rather than a necessity.
