Last week I looked at the contributions of the Holland-Dozier-Holland team to the Motown sound of the Sixties. This week I survey the songbook of
Norman Whitfield.
Whitfield came from New Yorks Harlem and pretty much lived in that areas pool halls. The family moved to Detroit in the late Fifties to work in his brother-in-laws chain of drug stores.
He began hanging out at Hitsville USA, the office of Berry Gordys Motown empire, then in its infancy. After a while, Whitfield became such a major pain that Gordy either had to throw him out or hire him. Gordy hired him to work in the quality control department, where he had to use his ear and judgment to determine which songs would be released. At the age of 23, he got to join the song writing staff.
In 1963, Whitfield teamed up with Mickey Stevenson and Marvin Gaye to write this song, which hosted the last session to involve Martha & the Vandellas as backup singers. In a few weeks, Heat Wave would establish them as a top-drawing act for the label. This was to be Gayes first single to make the Top 10.

That’s the only song I’ve ever run into that uses the terms “dykes” and “fairies”. Very politically incorrect.

Berry Gordy ran a somewhat looser shop in those early days, and there was no problem with Eddie Holland of H-D-H walking down the hall and penning a tune with
Norman Whitfield. This 1964 effort got the girls on the charts for the first time in three years.
