The Avengers‘ good news spelled bad news for Battleship, which debuted to a dismal $9 million on Friday. That puts the board game-inspired action film on pace for a $26 million weekend — a result that Universal clearly didn’t have in mind when it green-lighted the $209 million picture. By comparison, the year’s other big expensive flop, Disney’s John Carter, mustered a slightly better $30.2 million its first weekend. Both movies starred Taylor Kitsch, whose young career is getting off to an incredibly unfortunate start.

I went and saw Battleship, wasn’t in the same league as Transformers or Avengers but did enjoy it.
I don’t know why its dissed so much, except perhaps its all about the Navy and crippled vets saving planet earth, oh and honest to god real BB63 Missouri vets that used the Missouri to kick ET’s ass. Now I could imagine the whiny anti patriotic left would try to make this film out as a loser, well I saw it and then I went out and bought the Xbox 360 game which my son who is 18, a Sergent in the JROTC totally enjoyed.
And I like John Carter as well, so apparently somebody and a whole lot of somebodies think they can be judgmental for most of America, I disagree.
Bad marketing probably is the problem here.....they could have called “Battleship” something else, tying the movie in with the game was a bad idea.
As for “John Carter”, I have a simple question, how many people would have seen “Star Wars” if the movie was called instead “Luke Skywalker”?
After a dismal 2011, Hollywood's had an incredible run in 2012 with all kinds of unlikely hits. But this weekend is down 18% over last year because four seemingly sure-fire entries have tanked. "Battleship," "The Dictator," "What To Expect When You’re Expecting" both opened soft this week and the Johnny Depp/Tim Burton re-imagining of "Dark Shadows" sunk 61% after an already disappointing debut last weekend.
..What's fascinating about "Battleship" is that by all accounts it's a very patriotic film and for over a decade now the left-wing propagandists in Hollywood and the media that carries their water have told us that American patriotism doesn't sell overseas. Well, here's a case of an openly patriotic film making a ton of money internationally but not here in America (almost certainly as a result of word of mouth).

You are quite right, Disney should have just kept it as the original name, “A Princess of Mars” but following so soon after its recent mega flop Mars needs Moms some eggheads figured Mars was a baaaad word for marketing.
Well I can say this, Battleship (the game) has been a family favorite, my son and I have played it a million times.
Movies are supposed to be FUN, to be entertaining, obviously something a socialistic society would frown upon, they don’t want rebellious dreamers, look at what Russia did to that class.
Its marginalization of decent films full of good old fashion patriotism.If America went full scale forced socialistic in the future we would NEVER see films like this anymore. Sometimes real entertainment is cheap, its silly and often just escapism.
Battleship was just a decent entertainment, my son and I liked it equally as well as Avengers, I more so because of of Big Mo saving the day.

I would rather watch Battleship than fork over my hard earned cash to liberal actors like Clooney or Sam (I love Obama) Jackson who insult me and insert their left wing politics in their movies and off-screen. How many movies are there that don’t require these ass clowns to do that?

i watched the outlaw josey wales today...one of the best movies Eastwood ever did...going to see the dictator tomorrow...first movie in two years to watch in the theater.
I am glad that the Expecting one is doing poorly Chris Rock is a jackass and an Obama brown noser.
Saw Battleship tonite.
Not a bad movie, even the wife liked it.
With a little willing suspension of disbelief, it can be fun to watch.
And it’s clean, too.
The five minutes I watched were very painful, but I'm sure they filmed it for almost nothing.
I watched Princess of Mars on Netflix last week. It's a halfway decent version of John Carter released in 2009. Dumb but entertaining popcorn for the mind.

Battleship should have been about something factual, say the battle between the USS Washington and the IJN Kirishima.
Or even Hood and Bismarck.

Note that at least in the Los Angeles ad market, Battleship had a blitz of advertising in radio, television and other media markets - a desperate attempt to turn what was likely to be a stinker into something that might break even in DVD sales. When DJs are giving away tickets to your movie, and sound like they feel bad about sticking you with them, you don’t have much of a movie to peddle.
Vs The Avengers with a pretty limited ad buy and still roaring success (they are on track for a $50 million dollar weekend, something Battleship would be happy to earn at this point in domestic receipts for the next three weeks.
