~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Fort Drum, New York
Fort Drum, New York consists of 107,265 acres. Its mission includes command of active component units assigned to the installation, provide administrative and logistical support to tenant units, support to tenant units, support to active and reserve units from all services in training at Fort Drum, and planning and support for the mobilization and training of almost 80,000 troops annually. Fort Drum is home to the 10th Mountain Division.
The division headquarters, 3rd Brigade Combat Team and two Battalion Task Forces from the 4th Brigade Combat Team deployed to Afghanistan in 2006, staying in the country until 2007. The division and brigade served in the eastern region of the country, along the border with Pakistan, fulfilling a similar role as it did during its previous deployment. During this time, the deployment of the brigade was extended along with that of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, however, it was eventually replaced by the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team which was rerouted from Iraq.
After a one-year rest, the headquarters of the 10th Mountain Division was deployed to Iraq for the first time in April 2008. The division headquarters served as the command element for southern Baghdad, while the 4th BCT operated in Northeast Baghdad under the 4th Infantry Division headquarters from November 2007 until January 2009. The 10th Mountain participated in larger scale operations such as Operation Phantom Phoenix.
The 3rd Brigade Combat Team was slated to deploy to Iraq in 2009, but that deployment was rerouted. In January 2009, the 3rd BCT instead deployed to Logar and Wardak, eastern Afghanistan to relieve the 101st Airborne Division, as part of a new buildup of US forces in that country. The brigade was responsible for expanding Forward Operating Bases in the region, as well as strengthening US military presence in the region in preparation for additional US forces to arrive.
The 2nd Brigade Combat Team is scheduled to deploy to Iraq in the fall of 2009, as a part of the 2009-2010 rotation to Iraq. The 1st Brigade Combat Team is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in early spring 2010. The Army is currently expanding housing at Fort Drum, hoping to relocate the home base of the 4th Brigade Combat Team from Fort Polk to Fort Drum before 2013. Learn More About Fort Drum HERE!

Fear Not
May 22, 2012
My wife became seriously ill during her pregnancy with our second child. As the doctors struggled to find the problem, she continued to grow weakerdangerously so.
Watching her suffer was a helpless and horrible feeling for me, and there were days when it felt as if God were not hearing our prayers. One Sunday, while I was looking for comfort from Scripture, my eyes landed on the first verse in Isaiah 43.
Fear not, it begins, and ends with you are Mine. Instantly, the Holy Spirit made the words personal. The intimate way God addresses Israel reminded me of His always-present attention to us too: When you pass through the waters . . . through the rivers . . . through the fire (v.2). Each phrase rose up in crescendo, from the pages to my heart.
Our comfort in that hour came not from promises of healing or miracles, but from knowing we were never alone. We had many other frightening times, including just after Ethans birth, when it looked as if both he and Cheryl would be lost. But God had used His words to comfort us and prepare us for those harder moments!
Let these words be a reminder to you that you are never alone.
At times our fears may loom so large,
We long for proof that God is near;
Its then our Father says to us,
Have faith, My child, and do not fear. D. De Haan
Never forget in the darkness, what you know to be true in the light.

BAND OF BROTHERS

Members of the 101st Airborne, June 7, 1944 at Ste.Marie du Mont France
WORLD WAR II
This day is call'd the feast of Crispian. He that outlives this day, and comes safe home, Will stand a tip-toe when this day is named, And rouse him at the name of Crispian. He that shall live this day, and see old age, Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours, And say, "To-morrow is Saint Crispian." Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars, And say, "These wounds I had on Crispin's day."

Members of the "Chosin Few", 1st Marine Division, December 1950
KOREA
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot, But he'll remember with advantages What feats he did that day. Then shall our names, Familiar in his mouth as household words, Harry the King, Bedford, and Exeter, Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester, Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red. This story shall the good man teach his son; And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remembered-

Navy Corpsman D. R. Howe treats the wounds of Pfc. D. A. Crum, "H" Company, 2nd Battalion, Fifth Marine Regiment, during Operation Hue City.
VIETNAM
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition: And gentlemen in England now a-bed Shall think themselves accursed they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division in action, Afghanistan, 2011
AFGHANISTAN
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more, Or close the wall up with our English dead. In peace there's nothing so becomes a man As modest stillness and humility; But when the blast of war blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the tiger; Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage; Then lend the eye a terrible aspect; Let it pry through the portage of the head Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it As fearfully as does a galled rock O'erhang and jutty his confounded base, Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
THE STRUGGLE AGAINST TYRANNY GOES ON. AS IT HAS SINCE TIMES IMMEMORIAL, THE BAND OF BROTHERS STANDS FAST IN THE BREACH!
They have our six!
Honor them for their Service and Sacrifice!

Aloha, Biglook! getting ready to pack it in for the evening. I had a particularly arduous PT session tonight. The atrial flutter reared its ugly head during my work on the bike. Had to slow my pace substantially to keep it within limits. The rest of the session went okay but I was totally exhausted.
Sounds like you had a good sojourn earlier today - a young wahine can do a lot to improve your outlook on things.

Evenin’ Luvy!
How’s things in your neck of the woods?
I’ve been havin’ pain in my shoulder and when I let my arm swing when I walk. I had an x-ray done awhile back and it didn’t show anything. Then I had the bright idea of getting some physical therapy to hopefully strengthen the surrounding muscles so I could get more range of movement, well I just irritated the heck out of it I guess. My family Dr. told me to quit that, then told me to get an MRI done of the shoulder. So, I did that today and this afternoon her secretary called me and let me know that they found I have arthritis. So I go to see a specialist soon. Yay rah! I’m “old and busted” like my son calls me! Officially “over-the-hill”. :(

Aloha Doc!
Keep going, but know your limits. ( I'm not really the one to give advice....a friend of mine once said I was crazy because I'd work till it hurts.)
It was a surprise meeting up today; just stopping by a small store after checking my mail and up runs a cute young wahine in print bikini and tackles me. She had just come from an afternoon at the beach with her daddy so this chance meeting turned into a late lunch.
I'd like to be tackled by girls in bikinis......just wish they weren't my grandaughters.
