Study: 1 in 4 kids diabetic or pre-diabetic

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Recent data shows a shocking jump in youth diabetes.

A new study in the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics said 1 out of 4 youth in the U.S. is diabetic or pre-diabetic. The study looked at kids under 20 years old.

It showed between 2000 and 2008, the percentage of teens with pre-diabetes and diabetes jumped from nine to 23 percent.

Local Diabetes Educator Janet Stewart at Southeast Health said in the past decade she's seen the number of kids with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes jump almost 30 percent. She said there are a number of causes: larger portions of food, sugary drinks, and lack of activity, all can be problems in the summer when kids aren't in school.

"The summer time is a time you really have to watch him close," said Steve Missey. Her son has Type 1 Diabetes. "You have to keep an eye on him, keep him close, especially in the summer because there's so much more activity."

Missey said Connor likes to swim, and do other active things which can burn a lot of carbs. He said they have to monitor both how much he burns, and how what he eats.

"You know you're always worried, is he going to be low with his blood sugars," said Missey. "You're always watching and making sure, is he going to crash on you it's something you're always afraid of."

A fear Missey hopes he can help prevent other parents from going through.

Diabetes Educator Janet Stewart at Southeast Health says in the past decade she's seen an increase in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes by about 30 percent, and says summer is the perfect time to warn parents of the dangers.

"Of course your kids will have more time on their hands, so it will be important to engage them in activities that involve fitness or physical movement making sure that it's fun," said Stewart.

Stewart suggested making sure your kids are moving for a minimum of 60 minutes a day, avoiding sugary drinks, and choosing appropriate food portions.

"The food choices that you make certainly influence your child," said Stewart. "As a family spending time together, being an excellent role model, considering the fuel that you put in your body your health and energy as well as making fitness fun."

Missey said the food changes are a positive influence on their entire family, and said he's glad they're able to regulate Connor's diabetes together.

"He's no different than anybody else, he can do all the activities the other kids can do, it's just something you have to keep an eye on," said Missey.

The American Association of Diabetes Educators shows some tips for people with diabetes in the summertime. It suggests: choose lean, grilled meats, stock up on veggies, hold the mayo, limit your intake of breads and rolls, drink water, not sugar, stick to your routine.

It shows filling half of your plate with veggies, quarter of your plate with starchy items, and a quarter with lean meat.

For activities the association suggests going for a walk, throwing a Frisbee, take a hike, playing badminton or volleyball, going on a bike ride, or taking a swim.

The Southeast Diabetes Center will hold a Day Summer Camp for kids with Diabetes. The goal is for kids to meet other kids like them, going through a similar situation. Summer DAY (Diabetes and Youth) Break is scheduled for Thursday and Friday July 26 & 27, 2012 8:30am to 4:30pm at Health point Fitness in Jackson. Registration deadline is Friday, July 6, 2012. Call (573) 339-0121.

You can also support the cause by shopping at Kohl's as part of the Kohl's Cares program where proceeds of certain items help pay for diabetes care not covered by insurance.

Liberal Trial Lawyers have done a lot for creating childhood obesity as their lawsuits against schools for little johnny getting a black eye from a dodge ball have taken all the fun and pain from being a kid so kids are raised to be docile little slugs.

No HFCS reduction of carb intake, plus exercise, no diabetes.

That's better

No junk food on the EBT card would go a long way to curb adolescent diabetes. That is my feeling after waiting in line at Walmart recently and watching a lady buy a whole cart full of junk food with an EBT card. Her obese son appeared to be about 9 years old got a Mt. Dew Code Red soda pop at the last second to go with his box of ho-ho’s on the EBT card. It was after work and if that kid drank that whole 20 ounce caffeine/sugar loaded monstrosity he probably did not go to sleep until after midnight. I bet he is getting an SSI check for ADD or some other ailment and is probably in special education classes that cost 3-4 times what it costs to educate a regular kid.

The week before that I watched another lady buy a cart full of really nice meats and junkfood. Yep, she pulled out the EBT card as she talked loudly on her smartphone. I must be cursed because everytime I am in line worrying about my grocery bill I am behind the EBT card recipient who uses the same machine my debit card goes in.

My wife and I have watched our grocery bill climb severely the last few years and we have cut back on “comfort foods.” We even started a huge garden/orchard to offset the expenses. Why can’t EBT cards purchase only staple foods like milk, rice, ground beef, chicken, and generic non-sugar cereals? Ice cream, ho-ho’s, sugar sodas, cocoa krispies, and filet mignon all seem a tad bit excessive to me. Why can’t our leaders put common sense in front of graft by corporations that make this crap? Is it surprising that so many of these kids are obese and have chronic health problems? We even pay their health care!

Sorry for the rant.

I like someone elses idea....a nutritious GRUEL for those in need of sustenance....beyond that....NOTHING. Would make administration MUCH easier, and lower the costs tremendously.

From the study:
Youth who reported that they were diagnosed as being diabetic were also classified as adolescents with diabetes.
This sounds to me as if there was an unknowable degree of potential for the classification to depend on the diagnostic criteria in effect at the time of each diagnosis, as well as the criteria actually used by each diagnosing physician.

This is interesting because the criteria recommended by WHO and the ADA did change significantly at just about the time this study was beginning.

Your rant is well understood, and a long time coming.
I'm late fifties, my parents mid to late seventies, and my mother and I are Diabetic II, and my father's got three stets in him, and on blood meds.
I recommend a few books. But let's first start with our Maker's instructions,
People need exercise to stay healthy, and taking recess play time away from schools isn't a good thing.
Like all health issues, you need a doctor helping you along if you run into diabetes, and people can be pre-diabetic for years and be in self denial.
You just get sleepy all the time, and you get weak after a few minutes exertion.
If you suspect you're having these symptoms, get it checked and do it now.,

I see that they’re still preaching the same nonsense that caused the problem in the first place.

The war on fat caused all this disease. There should have been a war on carbs and PUFAs instead.

God did not give us poison to eat, and meat and animal fats are not the bad guys.

We made our own poisons. We artificially hydrogenated oil. We refined sugar. We extracted PUFAs instead of leaving them where God intended. We injected our livestock with hormones and antibiotics. We made HFCS.

In fact, we’ve abused corn so badly that I’m surprised that God hasn’t taken it away from us.

When I was in college 30 years ago, we were told that the average per capita intake of all types of sugar was 90 some pounds per year. I just heard that the figure is now almost 200 pounds. Much of the increase is due to hfcs.

And the feeding of corn to livestock is a crime against nature, and has created the obesity epidemic.

I agree. If we are going to buy people’s groceries we should do it like the WIC program with only certain healthy foods qualifying.

I thought I'd try KFVS for some local color.

I was 10 years old in 1955 when our family got our first t.v. and KFVS was the only channel we could get.

I don't have a child in "special education" but firmly believe that they are "regular kids" too. It's not like a child has a choice in the matter.

Stupid reporting.
They are mashing type I and type II together.
Type 1 diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar or being overweight. It is an autoimmune disease.
The two types of diabetes are totally different diseases with the same name.
It frustrates me when reporters use the symptoms and painful treatments that are done for type I but site the preventable causes and prevalence of type II.
They are taking the worst of both types and making it sound worse than it is. Each type is bad enough, they don’t need to distort.

I am not demeaning kids who have special needs at all. My wife is a teacher and we have several friends who teach special education classes. Everyone of them will tell you that many of the children in these classes are there because they can’t behave and receive no discipline/guidance at home. Everyone of them will tell you that there are many kids in these classes who are quite normal, but the parent(s) have them declared special needs so they get SSI Disability payments each month.

These students cost many times the average expense of regular students with added pension costs to the school district because they require more teachers/assistants than regular classes. There are many students who need these programs. There are many who don’t, but in order to get that SSI Disability check your kid is supposed to be in these classes. There are plenty of people scamming the system and it’s not just a monthly check for “disability” that we pay. We pay far more in the education costs associated with that child.

The child does not have a choice, but we should not encourage kids to be diagnosed as ADD by granting a monthly check in perpetuity for the diagnosis. Many of these kids end up in very expensive classroom settings. I would be willing to bet an obese kid drinking a 20 ounce caffeinated sugar bomb at dinnertime might not be in the best health by the time he reaches 18. We pay for that too when they are putting the Mt. Dew on the EBT card.
