Former Fukushima Worker: ‘I believe the country will be evacuated if No. 4 fuel pool collapses’

Former Fukushima Daiichi Worker: ‘I believe the country will be evacuated if No. 4 fuel pool collapses’ — ‘Should be hundreds or thousands of people working furiously every day’ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chris Canine has 15 years experience as a Health Physics Technician, Chemist and Radiation Safety Instructor. He has worked at over 20 plants throughout the United States, Japan and Mexico — including Fukushima #1 and #2 in the late 1970′s.

On May 15, 2012 he wrote:

There are several reasons why I believe the country will be evacuated if the #4 SFP collapses. The amount of radioactive material in the fuel pool dwarfs the total amount at Chernobyl by a factor of 5 to 10. Chernobyl’s core was still mostly contained in a building (although heavily damaged), and most of the radioactive material melted downward and became lava like. If #4 SFP collapses it will be lying on the completely open ground, probably going critical on and off in portions of the pile for years. The dose rate from this pile will make dropping sand or anything from the air much more lethal than anything at Chernobyl. And probably impossible. The entire site at Fukushima will be uninhabitable and unworkable because of the dose rate coming from this pile of fuel. That means there will be no control of the other fuel pools, and we could lose control of them.

Nuclear experts will soft sell the ramifications because that is how the industry works. When the experts “have concerns” about the situation at #4 that means they are pooping their pants. My experience at Fukushima was 30 years ago. I worked in the industry for about 15 years as a health physics technician. I was also referred to as a “nuclear gypsy” because I traveled from plant to plant working outages. That meant I was always in the middle of the hottest jobs in the heart of the plant. The engineers will talk about this part or that part of a plant, but I have been all those places wearing full gear. He later noted: “No reasonable person with my type experience would question my conclusion if any of the fuel pools collapse. There should be hundreds or thousands of people working furiously every day to get the buildings fortified and the fuel moved.”

“When the experts “have concerns” about the situation at #4 that means they are pooping their pants.”

How many professionals would post something like this?

I don’t know whats going on at #4 and have read that all sorts of death, doom, and generally bad things are heading our way in the aftermath of Fukushima ... however ... “pooping their pants” ... in an article like this? Really?

Been some very weird stuff going on at Fukushima the past few weeks. Check out the videos below. There are bright flashes that just appear on the ground. No idea what they are.

First notice the steam coming out of the reactors on May 2nd. Then at about the 52 second mark, a bright flash appears on the ground. Lower right side. Then at 2:19 and 2:22 it happens again, but much brighter and over more ground areas.

2012.05.02 01:00-02:00 (Live Fukushima Nuclear Plant Cam)

At 35 seconds it happens again on May 23rd.

2012.05.23 00:00-01:00(Live Fukushima Nuclear Plant Cam)

Any ideas besides (I am not saying its space aliens, but its space aliens).

I don’t really like talk like that either, but on consideration I decided that it was helpful in making his point.

Never met a HPT that didn’t think they didn’t know everything about everything.

Stay on the step off pad and shut the hell up!

Very scary article here:

Can not speak to the accuracy or bias of info on this site. If true we should be quite conerned.

““When the experts “have concerns” about the situation at #4 that means they are pooping their pants.”

If they are saying the Experts are “pooping their pants” I wouldn’t worry about that too much. In Japan, pooping your pants is a common foreplay ritual, so it can’t be THAT bad can it?

What’s being done:
http://www.world-nuclear-news.org/RS_Fukushima_fuel_removal_buildings_1904121.html

The pool support has already been reinforced.

If another 100-year earthquake comes along in the meantime, the #4SFP probably won’t be the largest problem Japan will have.

IIRC they have done something to reinforce that pool from the damage done by the H2 explosion. The pools contents remain ok. The most worrisome is doubtless the prior core of reactor No. 4, which IIRC was placed in the pool late 2010. I don't recall off the top of my head how long cores are normally held in local spent fuel pools before eligible for further processing, but this core has been there about 1.5 years and the rest of the pool's contents significantly longer. They've started work, at least design stage, for a building next door and over the pool, containing a suitable crane for removing its contents to better locations, the original crane being out of order from the explosion. If you follow the links from the above link they are aiming to start removing its fuel in about 15 months. However, they state the uncertain conditions of the debris may extend that. I don't know if they're doing all they can do, but they are doing non-trivial things.

[ Idea: How about us taking all the Japaneese?

To mass-balance the globe, we’ll naturally have to ship all of our Muslims and liberals to Japan.

We benefit.

The Japanese benefit.

The world benefits.

Deal? ]

I like this idea provided they evacuate all of the cool landmarks and stuff because if we ship the crazies over there they will blow them up with dinomite like the buddist statues in afghanistan.

[ Yikes, indeed.

Where would the Japanese go? China?

I hope the pool holds. Can anyone guess how long the period of extreme danger is? ]

The Japanese would rather live in siberia than move to china....

That being said we could move ALL the japanese here and we could use the a little of “Japanese Xenophobia” and “Japanese UN-PC attitude” in the ol’ melting pot.

First, Japan is kind of a long, skinny country. Korea and parts of China would be in greater proximity and danger than would parts of Japan. Second, as several posters have pointed out, they are doing “something”. There are likely some environmental politics in this article.

A catastrophic failure is certainly possible but not likely. Another 9.0 tremor could do it.

I say evacuate the Japanese to Hawaii and California!

They would be a fine addition to those two overly liberal states.

10 million or so in NY wouldn’t hurt either.

I clicked in thinking this was just more hysteria. I leave very concerned. I had no idea there is that much spent fuel laying around there. And we have similar storage situations all over this country because Harry Reid (with a lot of help) got the Yucca Mountain project killed.

I don’t think the Japanese will be going to China. There are still a lot of hard feelings over what they did to the Chinese in the late ‘30’s.
