ATF to accept public comments prior to outlawing shotguns (Apr 18, 2011)
Greeley Gazette ^ | Apr 18, 2011 | Jack Minor

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is taking a rare step of allowing public comments prior to issuing a decision on a study that could result in outlawing certain types of shotguns currently available to citizens.

The ATF completed a study regarding the importability of certain shotguns. The basis for a possible ban is based on a loosely defined “Sporting Purpose” test. Using the vague definition almost all pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns could be banned as they are all capable of accepting a magazine, box or tube capable of holding more than 5 rounds. Other characteristics determined to be “military” by the ATF can also be used as a basis for a ban.

Ironically, many shotguns with “military” features are currently being used in shooting competitions held by the USPSA, IDPA and IPSC. The rules could also result in obscure regulations where an individual would be unsure if he is violating them or not.

Dudley Brown, Executive Director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, said if the ATF succeeds with the banning of tactical shotguns it “will be the most dangerous interpretation of the 1968 Gun Control Act ever envisioned and will outlaw thousands of perfectly legitimate home defense shotguns.”

The ATF is currently allowing public comments on the study until the end of the month. Those wishing to express concerns about the study can send an email to shotgunstudy@atf.gov

“I would leave California in a minute, but they already have my photo and fingerprints, and even my social security number.

It’s too late for me, but you can help others.”

Come to a state where you can register to vote as a nobody. Your ‘number’ is as good as the next person’s. Don’t get arrested and ‘they’ do not have your finger prints. Even if ‘they’ did, you could still vote. Bet you could absentee vote in a number of states right now.

Do you have one of those California ankle trackers on? if not, you are the only reason for remaining in your state.

BTW, how many Freepers know civilians can’t buy double ought buckshot in Californai?

I searched for such a law prohibiting the purchase of double aught buckshot in CA and I am unable to locate said law. I do not think this is an accurate statement.

Actually, my point is that most manufacturers list their 12ga magazines’ capacities based on 2 3/4” shells. That’s the standard length. 3” and 3.5” are Magnum shells. Anything less than 2 3/4” is considered 12ga Short these days.

If 2 3/4 inches is a "round", that's fine. Someone else said they had an 8 round magazine on a short-barreled shotgun.

I suspect those are the 12ga Short variety. But does that count as a "round"? If it does, then will they start regulating magazines according to how many of those it will hold?

Actually I'll be leaving soon, sometime this year.

Unfortunately I can't afford to get back to the Texas coast, so I will be somewhere short of that.

“That sounds great in theory, but in reality...I’m stuck in MA, and until I graduate college, I’ll continue to be stuck. The bottom line is that I simply do not have enough dollars to relocate.”

BS! Yer an idiot/tool/brainwashed if you believe that your own two legs cannot start walking and find you a REAL job to put food in your mouth.

BTW, how many Freepers know civilians can’t buy double ought buckshot in Californai? But you can buy deer slugs.

I've read and heard from several sources that #4 buckshot is the best balance of stopping power / wall penetration for home defense.

Is that still available in California?

But, banning any load is reason enough to hate California.

I don't think they give a rat's patootie what size is the standard.

They simply want to pass legislation that an X amount of shells is not acceptable in that scattergun.

Then they will simply tweak for less and less capacity, until only single shot shooters will be tolerated, then only muzzle loaders. They simply wish to remove firearms from people like....you!

Look at the jobless rate among teenagers. What is it now, 50%? What should I do, drop the job I have and go live in a cardboard box? Say screw college and stack cans for the rest of my life? Then I'd be setting myself to have no options for the duration of my stay on this earth.

I fully expect to get the hell out of the northeast as soon as I possibly can, which isn't now. The days when you can up and go and make your own way without any kind of preperation are gone, courtesy of Barack Obama and others.

And may I ask where you live, what you do for a living, and whether or not you have a degree or some kind of training in what you do.

I know New Mexico very well, and am very connected to it since I have had family there for generations, even my father and mother both lived there as children during the 1930s, and current brothers, sisters, and a stepmother live there since the 1970s, my father died there, in fact I will have to move there for at least a few years when I leave here, I can guarantee that the Obama supporting New Mexico is not exactly Texas, or even as republican as San Diego where I live now, so I wouldn’t be so high and mighty as to tell a kid to drop out of college to move there.

Probably. But all of them count as a round. Makers just choose to select the standard length one as the one they use to say how many rounds will fit in a tube magazine. Much like a lever action carbine in .38 Special/.357 Magnum, which also has a tube mag - the manufacturer specs it with the shorter, ‘standard’ round.

Also, no, 2 3/4” is not 12ga Short. 12gs Short is mostly an obsolete measure, but they were 2”, 2 1/4” and 2 1/2”. 2 3/4” is and has been the standard for the past 40 years. Retail stores carry 2 3/4” and 3” and occasionally the 3.5”, but the 2.75” is what they will hand you if you go in and ask for some 12ga shotgun shells.

I know. I'm just not getting the hang of this "stand down and let the hoodies have it" thing, and they're not happy about that.

“...#4 buckshot is the best balance of stopping power / wall penetration for home defense.”

Several years ago I read an article by Massad Ayoob advocating #1 buckshot for home defense - 12 x .30 cal. pellets. 00 buckshot is usually 9 x .36 cal. pellets and - while devastating - it does tend to overpenetrate if all pellets do not impact intended bad guy.

They make 2" 12 gauge "tactical" rounds now designed specifically so you can get more of them into a tube mag.

If that counts as a "round" then anything over 12" capacity will hold 6 rounds, and be banned. That means you'd be limited to 4 rounds of 2 3/4, or 3 rounds of 3 and 3 1/2 inch.

BS! Head to North Dakota my friend. You can learn welding, drilling, carpentry, and on and on in that boom state and make a really good wage without the college disturbance.

As for me.... I do not have a degree. I do not have training. I DID drop a crap job and explore the world. A Master found me and I played with the Beyond the Beyond for a while. I did go a few days at a time without eating for a few years from time to time but the Lord always kept me going.

What excuse are you looking for???
