Stem cell treatment regrows Whitfield man's foot
The (Dalton, Georgia) Daily Citizen ^ | 05-28-2012 | Charles Oliver

By the time Dr. Spencer Misner had carved away the dead and diseased flesh from Bobby Rice’s right foot last year, little remained other than bones and tendons.

“I couldn’t believe it. It didn’t look real. It looked like something out of a movie,” recalled Rice, a Whitfield County resident.

Today, the ankle has almost completely healed. It looks like Rice had simply scraped it. And Rice’s foot has largely healed, too. Misner credits cutting-edge stem cell treatments for saving Rice’s foot and leg.

Regrow may be bit of an overstatement, but this is impressive.

Fickey said they are made from adult stem cells derived from donated placenta and do not come from embryos.

What? You mean they DIDN'T have to suck the brains out of a half-born fetus to harvest the stem cells that did this? Impossible!

You have to get pretty far into that article to see that these are ADULT stem cells we’re talking about. No surprise, really.

The author was setting the stage for the audience he antiocipated to be reading the piece. Whitfield County is not the most sophisticated region of Georgia, even for North Georgia. There is a slowly dwindling Hispanic population in the area and the carpet industry still dominates the economy, though it too is fading fast. Up the road a bit is the more sophisticated Chattanooga, Tennessee, but Whitfield County is far from sophisticated. To differentiate embryonic from adult stem cells is a stretch for the educational and political background of Whitfield County. The author did a credible kob with the complexities, though he needs an editor.

Adult stem cells are the ones that actually work, but not the ones that fit the narrative.

No need to be paranoid.

The article made it extremely clear that adult stem cells were used and that information was given at an appropriate place in the article.

Great for him, but I found more impressive was Suzanne Somers regrowing her breast with stem cells.

I am confused. Adult and placenta don’t compute for me.

Before reading the article I am going to guess that these are adult stem cells.

Wonderful news they used “adult” stem cells and not embryonic! Also noticed the man was a diabetic, which makes me now wish they would do the next step and use some more adult stem cells and regrow the islet cells cells in his pancreas! Type 1 diabetics like me would be greatly appreciated!

In the context of stem cells, “adult” refers to stem cells from an organism which has already undergone tissue differentiation ... essentially, is no longer an embryo. Placentas and umbilical cords contain loads of stem cells ... “adult” by cell standards, even though taken from an infant.

I wish the company would be so generous with the free treatments to repair some of our military who have lost limbs.

From what I hear, the adult stem cells work better anyway.

They did not use embryos because they are knuckle dragging science haters. At least, that is what I was told by the “smart people.” ;)

Sick one, no, they used what has been medical waste for the last 5,000 years to help this man and now many, many more. Placenta from live births are processed to remove their inner most lining. That lining contains growth factors and adult stem cells. Those stem cells, now this is a big word, so hold on, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are able to become whatever is needed by the host body, that is bone, connective tissue, stromal (muscle) tissue, lipid (fat), even skin. Crawling from under your stone, you may find that this can even improve lives of folks you know. How bout that.
