After the 2001 terrorist attacks, California lawmakers sought a way to channel the patriotic fervour and use it to help victims' families and law enforcement. Their answer: specialty memorial license plates emblazoned with the words, 'We Will Never Forget.' Part of the money raised through the sale of the plates was to fund scholarships for the children of California residents who perished in the attacks, while the majority - 85 per cent - was to help fund anti-terrorism efforts. But an Associated Press review of the $15 million collected since lawmakers approved the 'California Memorial Scholarship Program' shows only a small fraction of the money went to scholarships.

Does anyone know how many California residents actually perished in the attacks?
The average payout to 9/11 victim families was $1.8 Million. Frankly, I’d rather the money California promised to collect go to the families of soldiers killed in the line of duty, myself.
The same thing will happen with money raised by Prop 29. None of that money will be used for cancer research. It will all go for state employees retirement and health programs. But......the state will never admit it. The other problem with Prop 29 is that there is no accountability as to where the money will be spent. It’s as thought it’s their money, not the peoples money.
But this just goes to show that if you want to support some charity then send the money to the charity directly instead of sending it to the state for a specialized plate. If you feel the need to tell everyone else driving about it, buy a bumper sticker.
The Red Cross is another institution who exploited the 9/11 catestrophy for personal gain. They took in untold hundreds of Millions - and haven’t paid what they said they would. They have paid only 30% of the $547 million received was spent as the standard disaster relief guidelines for meeting victims needs had been supplied to them.
Which means that I will NEVER donate to anyone when we have another emergency again. The gov’t is a group of liars, the American Red Cross is even worse. The only group I trust at this point, is my Church. I can see where my Church spends it’s money, and the people it helps.

Who is pushing 29? The Anti-29 commercials are coming from RJ Reynolds and Cop Unions...among others.
Forget the Red Cross and the United Way. They do not receive any of my contributions.

According to the Salvation Army, Commissioners W. Todd Bassett and his wife Carol A. Bassett jointly received basic living allowances and grants totaling $64,210 for 2004 plus housing valued at $34,116. That is still considerably less than the salaries of some of the other top charities.
Marsha J. Evans, the president of the American Red Cross, was paid $651,957 in 2004. The president of the United Way is now Ralph Dickerson Jr. who's current salary is $420,000 per year, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
UNICEF C.E.O. and President Caryl M. Stern earned $478,645 in 2009 according to a Better Business Bureau report. The Better Business Bureau also said that Brian Gallagher, CEO of The United Way earns $1,037,410 in 2008.
