New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity.
The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.
The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.

NYC already has a thriving black market. All this does is add new products to it.

I was there a week and a half ago. Never saw any fat people at all. All foods have the calorie count on the menu so there is no need for this silly law.
I lost five pounds walking everywhere. I walked so much my legs burned and I had to buy a coke and put a double shot of whiskey in it just to calm down so I could sleep.

Gee, it’s not like I can’t buy a 2-liter bottle of pop or bring my own container that I bought at a department store and have the clerk charge me for 2 refills.
I suspect this is really about raising tax revenue because most people would buy 2 smaller drinks. New York probably figures they can cet twice thé revenue.
Monthly ration/debit cards for your max sugar/sat.fat/animal protein allotment, plastered with Moo-chelle's ugly mug and wagging finger on one side, and her do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do My Plate logo on the other.
Just like in the Soviet bloc, those who tattle on the regime's enemies (watch it, Big Gulp guzzlers) will receive bonus rations.
