|
Archer T. Gammon (September 11, 1918 January 11, 1945) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decorationthe Medal of Honorfor his actions in World War II. Gammon joined the Army from Roanoke, Virginia in March 1942, and by January 11, 1945 was serving as a Staff Sergeant in Company A, 9th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division. On that day, near Bastogne, Belgium, he destroyed a German machine gun position before beginning a one-man assault on a Tiger Royal tank. He silenced a supporting machine gun emplacement and killed two infantrymen before he was killed by a shot from the tank. For these actions, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor a year later, on February 13, 1946. Gammon, aged 26 at his death, was buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Danville, Virginia. |
Staff Sergeant Gammon's official Medal of Honor citation reads:
He charged 30 yards through hip-deep snow to knock out a machinegun and its 3-man crew with grenades, saving his platoon from being decimated and allowing it to continue its advance from an open field into some nearby woods. The platoon's advance through the woods had only begun when a machinegun supported by riflemen opened fire and a Tiger Royal tank sent 88mm. shells screaming at the unit from the left flank. S/Sgt. Gammon, disregarding all thoughts of personal safety, rushed forward, then cut to the left, crossing the width of the platoon's skirmish line in an attempt to get within grenade range of the tank and its protecting foot troops. Intense fire was concentrated on him by riflemen and the machinegun emplaced near the tank. He charged the automatic weapon, wiped out its crew of 4 with grenades, and, with supreme daring, advanced to within 25 yards of the armored vehicle, killing 2 hostile infantrymen with rifle fire as he moved forward. The tank had started to withdraw, backing a short distance, then firing, backing some more, and then stopping to blast out another round, when the man whose single-handed relentless attack had put the ponderous machine on the defensive was struck and instantly killed by a direct hit from the Tiger Royal's heavy gun. By his intrepidity and extreme devotion to the task of driving the enemy back no matter what the odds, S/Sgt. Gammon cleared the woods of German forces, for the tank continued to withdraw, leaving open the path for the gallant squad leader's platoon.
|
|

The USAT Sgt. Archer T. Gammon which served the United States Army at the end of World War II was named in his honor. |

Getting It Right On The Inside
June 4, 2012
I love the story of Jonah! Its full of drama and important life lessons. After stubbornly refusing to do Gods will, Jonah finally preached a revival service in Nineveh that would have made him one of the most successful missionaries of his time. When the people repented and turned from their wicked waysand when God relented and turned from His anger against themyou would have expected Jonah to rejoice. Instead, he was angry that God was merciful. Why? Although he was finally obeying God by doing the right thing in the right place, he was deeply flawed on the inside.
Like Jonah, if we are not careful, we can be spiritually looking good on the outside, but far from God in our hearts. He is most interested in what we are like on the inside. His Word is sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit (Heb. 4:12). With it, He performs divine surgery to remove the greed, dishonesty, hatred, pride, and selfishness that live in the deep shadows of our hearts.
So the next time the Holy Spirit convicts you and asks you about your bad attitude (see Jonah 4:4)listen carefully. Surrender and let Him change you from the inside out.
I confess, heavenly Father, that I know what its like
to be more concerned about my outward obedience
than my inner rebellion. I want to look good to others.
Forgive me. Change me and make me pure within.
If God controls you on the inside, youll be genuine on the outside.

15 day forecast says working our way up to 70 by next Monday...now THAT is hot for here. And then rain in a couple weeks. I will believe it when it rains.

Multiple calls around this weekend and most of them very good.....except the one to my younger brother who's driving me nuts with his rants about the Mayan Calender and the end of the world.
My son and the cute little wahines are doing fine and soon we'll all be heading off to B'Day party for someone more their own age.
Hope his late post finds you well and in good spirits....after all, tomorrow is Monday. If not, try more spirits....

Glad you had a good day...but, oh my...the end of the world?
Have fun at the B’day party.
A couple parental issues earlier, fairly easily resolved, except now I have at least a half dozen phone calls to make in the morning. I looked over the surface of his desk and found several envelopes that will require phone calls to find out what is needed, or not. I ended up going through all the papers.
My Dad has finally consented to a cane....but for it to be effective, he must keep it with him....or remember where he left it. I think I have gone looking for it at least 4 times this weekend. Ready for the new week, I think.
