'Honor is a hard term to describe. It doesn’t have a color or weight or shape. If someone were to ask me what honor looked like, I’d probably struggle with what to say.
But something happened on May 23, 2012 at 9:31 a.m. at Gate 38 of Reagan National Airport that might change that. A flash mob of sorts broke out. But not like you’ve seen on YouTube with highly choreographed dance numbers or people singing a song in unison. In fact, virtually all of the participants of this “flash mob” didn’t know they would be participating until moments before it happened.
Let me explain. Shortly before 9:30 over the loud speakers, a US Airways gate attendant announced that an Honor Flight of World War II veterans would be arriving momentarily and encouraged anyone passing by to help greet them. Five or six people looked like they were officially part of the welcoming committee, and the rest of the people in the secure section of the airport were regular old travelers going somewhere. Then I had a terrible thought. What if these veterans came off the plane and just those five or six individuals were there to greet them. I walked a gate over to help see the veterans out.
But – then it happened and frankly, I wasn’t expecting it. All throughout the terminal, people left their gates and gathered around gate 38. A few active military personnel in plain clothes approached the gate attendant and politely asked if they could join in the salute within the jet way as the heros first stepped off the plane. Every human being in the terminal stood at attention and faced the door.'

I thank these brave men in my prayers every night before I go to bed. Their bravery and sacrifice gave me the privilege to serve in my own small way.

I think these might be the same group my husband got to be with the other evening. It was an Honor Flight group and our local KOC put them up for dinner. My little 10 year old got to present the colors as part of the Boy Scouts and also spend the evening with the WW vets.
It was a great learning experience for our son.
Thank you for posting this. My father-in-law was on one of those honor flights around 18 mos. or 2 years ago and absolutely had the time of his life.
It was a long day and draining but he said he’d do it all over again. I sent him the link and told him that this flash mob was saying thanks to all the vets including him.

My good friend accompanied his dad and other vets last month on an Honor Flight out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Said it was one of the best days of his life to share it with these vets.

Somethings wrong with the video or my screen because the picture went all blurry.
A few months after the WWII memorial opened my brother and I
flew our 79 yr old WWII combat wounded 11th Airborne dad to DC
from Ca to see it. Along the way whenever we went thru security
the old dude was pulled aside for special handling because the
titanium plate in head from his wound set off alarms. Didn’t seem
to bother him but tears welled in my eyes when I saw how some
of the TSA clowns treated a man who helped make it possible for
them to live in this free country. The old man said he was just
happy he was still on the right side of the lawn to make the
trip. I thought that was a pretty good perspective.
The screen’s all blurry. What’s up with that?
There still are Patriots out there, getting off the plane and in the airport.
