I have "typical" genes. But if the doctors that delivered me had a crystal ball and were only able to tell my parents all of the challenges, heartbreaks and failures I would experience in my life they would have been horrified.
We have two other children. All three of them give us such joy and love I couldn't imagine living my life without any one of them. I have no idea what issues and challenges my two boys face in life but I do know many of the challenges my daughter will face. I am greatful that we can start preparing now to help her overcome them.
When she was born the doctors told us all of the therapy she would need, all of the things she would never be able to do, etc.... But they could never have told us how awesome it would feel to hear her squeal with laughter, give hugs or tell us she loved us.
Oh, goodie. Then they’ll have 3500 more excuses to abort them. sarc//off
Our little granddaughter, also named Reagan ( her Mom was born on Pres. Reagan’s birthday) has a big brother. He was born with Spina Bifida, which has numerous severe lifelong issues and complications. His condition was not spotted in prenatal testing, which was horrifying to his doctors and nurses. It would not have made a difference to his parents.
This boy has lived his difficult life with joy and eagerness. He will be four this month. Three weeks ago he pulled himself up to standing for the first time at the bottom of the stairway. Then he climbed the stairs on his hands and knees, all the way to the top with such a look of wonder and
pride on his face. He can walk short distances with a walker, but cannot stand by himself without collapsing to the floor. In August he has to have extensive surgery for urological issues, and will lose a lot of ground for awhile. He is also autistic, but can communicate with each of us unless he’s overwhelmed. He knows all his letters and sounds, can spell and can read simple words that he sounds out. He can count to one hundred, and to twenty in Spanish. We really can’t compare him to anyone but himself, but every day with him is filled with love given and returned, and with the surprises of new accomplishments. I thank God daily for his precious life and that of his sister.
What a loss it would have been to the world if your son or our grandson would have been diagnosed in utero and destroyed by a “compassionate,” suffocating and murderous government regime.
Your grandson sounds like an absolute love——and his sister too,of course.

Someday this will become routine. Not soon, but eventually.
But... what if they find a “correctable” pre-disposition for homosexuality?

Assuming the parents and their physician make the decision, the correct answer is Nothing will go wrong, except the gene pool will be pruned of genetic defects.
A friend from college (Vietnam War era) was a Forward Air Control pilot, stationed in some places where Agent orange was literally all over the place. His wife had several miscarriages, which he felt was the result of the Agent Orange exposure.
Eventually, they did have one girl, normal, too.
He once said he knew why the miscarriages had occurred - “Nature's way of saying “Bad baby, start over.”
A biology major's comment to another bio major. Not something one can tell one’s wife, evidently. Especially if she does not have that sort of education.
This technology offers a way to avoid tragedy. Hopefully, it will be seen as the gift G*d meant when we were given dominion.
Alas, there was no guarantee such dominion would be exercised wisely, or compassionately.
Personally, I hope the research is made available widely so parents and their children can actualize their potential instead of suffer from preventable genetic debacles.
PS Perhaps a pill may someday be available to reverse the 1,400 years of incest resultant from Islamic second cousin marriages.
PPS One may even hope for an IQ pill and a “humane nature” pill for the obvious Islamic genetic deficiencies.

Reagan passed him on the steps today. Each day is full of surprise, joy, excitement, terror sometimes. All part of living. The day I became “Grandma” started the best phase of my life

I don’t like this kind of research, it can lead to bad things and perhaps that’s in the long range plans - in the eyes of governments. Thank God for ‘Angel’ mothers and grandmothers.

Teach him American Sign Language. It gives him a second way to access the language portion of his brain, a kinesthetic way. It also teaches more reading of body language and facial expression. Great tool for anyone on the spectrum.

Welcome to Holland

I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It’s like this......
When you’re going to have a baby, it’s like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It’s all very exciting.
After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, “Welcome to Holland.”
“Holland?!?” you say. “What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I’m supposed to be in Italy. All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Italy.”
But there’s been a change in the flight plan. They’ve landed in Holland and there you must stay.
The important thing is that they haven’t taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It’s just a different place.
So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.
It’s just a different place. It’s slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you’ve been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.
But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they’re all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say “Yes, that’s where I was supposed to go. That’s what I had planned.”
And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away... because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss.
But... if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things ... about Holland.
