A former Bangor Area High School teacher who had sex with a 17-year-old student was sent to prison for five months Friday by a Northampton County judge who said he expected her to be unhappy with his sentence.
But then Rachel L. Farrell, 26, surprised Judge Emil Giordano, who had just heard her defense attorney arguing for probation.

It is my opinion that you are exactly right.

He probably needs a math tutor.
I absolutely agree with prison for this woman, and I am okay with anything that happens to perverts who defend her.
“I think shes guilty, but should be made to serve out her sentence in my spare room.
Why? Do you want to fulfill your sex slave fantasy?”
Perhaps he thinks he is the victim of the rankest type of age discrimination. After all, such teachers were not available when he was in school. Certainly, you would not wish our fellow FReeper to suffer age discrimination, would you?
;-)
Addendum to post #25.
Have you considered the possibility the Freeper is making a good faith attempt to reduce the incarceration costs to the state? After all, I don’t think he demanded any rent, did he?
But while Giordano said he does believe she won't be in court again, he added that he needed to send a message to the community. "We're living in a society where schools, instead of being the safe places they're supposed to be, are places where teachers are the predators and students are the prey," Giordano said.
The schools have far surpassed the Catholic Church as the haven for predators, yet we hear only crickets.
I’ve always wondered why jail was the appropriate punishment.
Why shouldn’t it be revoking their teaching certificate or having to pound erasers or forcing them to five years of summer school or being forced to monitor the girls restrooms, etc.
I agree. She’s not a predator. She seems to have displayed a shocking lack of self-control for a twenty six year old woman with a college degree, but not a predator.
I will remain eternally grateful.
It is not alright for teachers to sexually prey upon students. You are an amoral ignoramous.
Rape is a violent crime last I checked.
Putting her in prison - even for five months - is totally unnecessary. Most people have no idea how incredibly expensive it is to maintain somebody in prison. Only people who are a danger to society should ever be put in prison.
“We have too many wrong people in jail, jail should only be for violent offenders. “
I wouldn’t go that far. Thieves, vandals, and frauds also belong in jail even when they are not “violent offenders”. There are also actions that are classed as “violent” which should not be illegal, like dueling.
I would say that where the supposed “victim” has no complaint to make, that law shouldn’t even exist. This student never complained about the extra lessons he received. Johns don’t complain about prostitution. Drug users are their own victims.
I wish you would make up my mind. When does society send worng doers to prison? When they do wrong but it isn't a danger to society? If she should be prevented from teaching isn't that showing that she is a danger?
Frankly, I think she needs a long process of psychological help, and should be kept away from kids, especially teenage male kids, and she needs supervision for an extended period while she gets deep psychological help. But prison? Nope, not even. She is a sick person, a woman with a psyche that has not grown up.
So sorry Sam, when you does the crime you does the time....otherwise don’t do the crime!
Somewhere out there is a 19 year old guy who doesn’t look a day over 13 and could make a killing whoring himself out to female teachers.
So is this a new thing or did young make students in the 40s and 50s and 60s just know a good thing when they had it and kept their mouths closed. I can’t remember hearing anything but male teachers having sex with young female students through about 5 years ago. Now suddenly, it is all female teachers and young boys.
What gives? Did they change the birth control formula to alter women’s brains or something?
