Murder as I see it. Not much different than towing someone out to sea on a couple of logs you’ve lashed together, giving them some fishing tackle, an umbrella and a distiller, then abandoning them out there. They won’t last long and you know it. It’s really a kind of murder, imo.

Thanks presidio9.
...those ambitious plans called for a build a trip to Mars in 2023, with the money for the trip coming from a "global media spectacle" and the explorers chosen in a style that sure sounded a lot like reality TV. Oh, and by the way, it's a one way trip.
I'd like to pick who gets sent.

The Martians need a Community Organizer. ACORN could go up first and get them organized for the messiah.

Turn on the planetary nuclear oxygen generator, silly.

Hell; I am an older fart, done most of what I want down here. Make sure my wife gets a percentage of the broadcast receipts so I know she will be well taken care of and I am game. Sounds like one kick in the head of a road trip. Every body dies someday, why not doing something that no one has tried before.

I think the idea is to establish a proper colony. If they’re going to resupply every two years, with sending more people every two years, it’ll eventually grow into something fantastic. Assuming, of course, they don’t all die within the first few months, or weeks, few minutes, or before they even arrive.

Sheila Jackson Lee
Member of the U.S. House
of Representatives
from Texas's 18th district

On a visit to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2005, Jackson Lee made embarrassing news by asking if the Mars Pathfinder had taken an image of the flag planted there in 1969 by Neil Armstrong.[2]

Prior to the 110th Congress, Jackson Lee served on the House Science Committee and on the Subcommittee that oversees space policy and NASA.

The first vote they take on anything will be the end of the colony.

Human nature.

I know plenty of talented, adventurous people who will FIGHT to be the first colonists on Mars. They will not care if it is a dangerous, one-way trip. Most of them are engineers and scientists.

No, they will not be “selected” by some government authority if its a private mission.

There are a few libs, lots of conservatives, but mostly libertarian leaning Spacers.

I worked in the space program and served the National Space Society (www.nss.org) during its infancy.

Many of my Spacer friends have devoted their entire lives to getting humans off this rock...permanently.

The Vikings did not colonize the New World because they lacked the ships and navigational technology to make it practical. By the time of Columbus, the technology had advanced...and then they discovered the gold of the Aztecs.

We already KNOW that the near Earth asteroids have fortunes in nickel, platinum group metals, and gold.

Humans WILL colonize outer space when the technology is there.

It should be OUR civilization and not the Russkies or Chinese who lead the exploration and exploitation of the High Frontier.

Lets see something new.

If it's sucky and lethal with no exits, are you sure you'd want to?

The Dutch are overcrowded. They build houses 14' wide and move their furniture in, up on the second and third floors, with the help of a block and tackle suspended from a convenient steelyard that sticks out above the third-floor hinged window (like a gate; there's one on the second floor, too). They hoist Oma's 140-year-old spinnet, the family dining-room board and sideboards, china cabinets, beds, and Mom's refrigerator up that way with, presumably, family help.

Losing about 300,000 people to a Mars colony would sound like a good idea to them.

That's why their doctors feel so warmly approbative of euthanasia and abortion (but I repeat myself).
