Washington Post: Remember that Mormon massacre?
Washington Examiner ^ | May 20, 2012 | Charlie Spiering

Posted on 06/12/2012 9:45:20 PM PDT by WilliamIII

The Washington Post published a story last night examining a massacre carried out by Mormons nearly 200 years ago, and examines whether or not it will affect Mitt Romney's support in the deep South.

"On Sept. 11, 1857, a wagon train from this part of Arkansas met with a gruesome fate in Utah, where most of the travelers were slaughtered by a Mormon militia in an episode known as the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Hundreds of the victims’ descendants still populate these hills and commemorate the killings, which they have come to call “the first 9/11.” "

So why is the Post examining old Mormon history?

... After reporting the details of the massacre, writer Sandhya Somashekhar concludes that "none of that history, including the massacre, may make much of a difference in the polls."

I thought blaming all of the world’s troubles on President Bush was goofy but blaming Romney for the Mountain Meadows Massacre is REALLY over the top. People need to lighten up on the recreational drugs.

I can see it now. “Mormanism Is a Made Up Cult” as a headline on Friday before the Tuesday election. Spare us, we know.

Out of control government killed over 100 million people in the 20th Century.

I wonder how that will impact 0bama’s support?

Indeed. This and every single bit of dirty laundry they can dig out on Mormons is going to be plastered over every MSM new outlet in the run up to the election.

I saw this coming a long while back. In fact, I am convinced that one of the reasons the Democrats wanted Mitt as the nominee is because they planned on using his Mormon belief against him — along with other things, of course.

Will it work? Don’t know. However, i do know we are all going to learn things about the Mormon church that we never knew, and that most Mormons never knew, either.

Since when is 155 years rounded up to 200?

It must be the new method, like when the media rounds Palin's 32 months of being Governor down to "2 years" or "her half term".

hmmm, and yet I wonder. How does the Mormom religion stack up against the saintly black liberation theology....

With the new numbers out today and the mind numbing amounts, I give a rats a** about Mitt’s religion.

"writer Sandhya Somashekhar"

Is that an Amish name? Baptist? Methodist? Catholic? Quaker?

Wow. The economy is doing fine.

Obama’s ancestors on one side are related to the folks that dropped the atomic bombs on Japan in WWII some nearly hundred years later. This could cost him the election.

Arab slave traders on the East coast of Africa which includes today’s Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique traded, bartered and sold blacks into slavery.

If you use the same logic of the New York Times relative to Romney and a 200 year old murder of innocents, then Obama is also guilty of the acts of slavery committed by his 50% Muslim heritage.

This desperately over-reaching article is beyond pathetic. Dredging up the Mountain Meadow Massacre of EIGHTEEN-FRIGGIN’-FIFTY-SEVEN and suggesting that ultra-conservative Arkansans might hold it against Romney? This is dirt-digging with a vengeance, Cloud-Cuckoo-Land political analysis. It may be an issue for a few throwbacks in the back of beyond but it is not even a state-wide concern, let alone something for a national campaign to fret over. Beyond that, the implication that the descendants would continue to blame an entire religion, rather than the long-dead perpetrators, is a condescending insult to the Ozark hill people.

...Hundreds of the victims’ descendants still populate these hills and commemorate the killings, which they have come to call “the first 9/11.” "

Mark Twain wrote in the Appendix B his book "Roughing It":

The men were almost all shot down at the first fire from the guard. Two only escaped, who fled to the desert, and were followed one hundred and fifty miles before they were overtaken and slaughtered. The women and children ran on, two or three hundred yards further, when they were overtaken and with the aid of the Indians they were slaughtered. Seventeen individuals only, of all the emigrant party, were spared, and they were little children, the eldest of them being only seven years old. Thus, on the 10th day of September, 1857, was consummated one of the most cruel, cowardly and bloody murders known in our history."

The number of persons butchered by the Mormons on this occasion was one hundred and twenty.
