Obama to celebrities: “You’re the ultimate arbiter” of this country’s direction

President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama visited the home of actors Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick for a joint fundraising appearance on Thursday night, during which the president offered the gathered stars a rather frightening piece of flattery.

The intimate dinner banked about $2 million, with 50 people paying $40,000 each. "

Speaking in a dimly lighted, art-filled room, Obama told supporters they would play a critical role in an election that would determine a vision for the nation's future.

"You're the tie-breaker," he said. "You're the ultimate arbiter of which direction this country goes."

Among the celebrities on hand to hear Obama’s remarks were Oscar winner Meryl Streep, fashion designer Michael Kors and Vogue editor Anna Wintour…

The president and Mrs. Obama also headlined a second glitzy fundraiser in Manhattan Thursday night that included a performance from singer Mariah Carey and remarks by singer Alicia Keys. The 250-person dinner yielded the Obama campaign at least $2.5 million.

Let me be clear.

ar·bi·ter

[ahr-bi-ter] noun

1. a person empowered to decide matters at issue; judge; umpire.
2. a person who has the sole or absolute power of judging or determining.

Who knows whether The One meant to merely butter up the glamorous group of One Percenters assembled specifically to give him gobs of cash, or if he actually believes what he just said — but either way, consider me outrageously outraged. I don’t think I could come up with a group of people less suited to the task of passing the “ultimate” judgment on the state of our nation.

I’m not knocking what celebrities do for a living — I enjoy the artistry of movies, music, and fashion as much as the next gal. But, if Mitt Romney is ostensibly “out of touch” with the middle class and “removed” from the issues concerning the common man because he was a movin’ and shakin’ businessman who earned a large fortune… I don’t even know what to say. The hypocrisy confounds me.

These wealthy Hollywood types seem to dearly love their Occupy-solidarity and their “war on women” and their extreme environmentalism, issues about which most Americans don’t care at all. President Obama heeds their opinions at his own peril, writes Michael Barone:

But there is one group of people Obama has to listen to: the people who give him large sums of money. He recently attended his 150th fundraiser. That’s more than the number attended by the last four presidents put together.

Obama has seen enough Architectural Digest-type interiors in Park Avenue triplexes and Beverly Hills mansions, and on the block in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights, where every house is owned by a billionaire, to develop an expertise in Louis XV walnut commodes and Brunschwig & Fils fabrics.

He’s also had plenty of chances to absorb the advice of the kind of rich liberals who like to give money to Democratic presidents. And the evidence that he has taken some of that advice is his initiatives on three controversial issues…

If the same-sex marriage reversal seems somewhat risky politically and the contraception mandate considerably riskier, the Keystone pipeline decision seems downright foolish politically. Voters tend to favor it by 2-1 margins, and if they’re not aware of it, the Republicans (and maybe the pro-pipeline unions) will make sure they are.

It’s sad, but I think this is pretty close to what he actually believes - ‘governance’ by chasing fads and fashions seems to be his style...

I’m really at the point now that nothing Obama does surprises me any more. In fact, I’d probably be more surprised if he wasn’t kissing Hollyweird ass. The man is president. What a loser. Seriously. Our president is...a...joke.

He will say what people want to hear. He will say anything at any time if he thinks it is to his advantage. He will pander to any audience.

He has no core beliefs other than in himself.

Obama always projects. On the rare occasions he isn’t outright lying.

He’s appealing to their sense of self-importance and self-absorption, both of which the celebrity crowd possesses copious amounts.

There are some who hang on a celebrity’s every word, but the vast majority of those in flyover country who are trying to eke out a living don’t listen and don’t care.

Empty heads, perfect hosts for a communist revolution, as long as it doesnt include them.

I was searching for the right pithy comment to summarize this idiocy, and there it was in the feedback beneath the blog:

“…pretend President with pretend people…

This group of under-educated, over-paid Obama groupies can continue to write checks to the Democrat Party. And conservatives can continue to boycott their pitiful efforts at “entertainment.”

So basically he spent the evening with a group of people who’s narcissism matches his own.

They truly believe they’re “all that”. They’re beautiful, rich, worthy of adoration, and smarter than the rest of us. We should be honored they are alive and breathing the same air as we are.

Sad as it makes me, this is one time I am forced to agree with something ObaMao says. Just look at the sad state of affairs our culture is in. A good deal of the immoral behaviors that were frowned upon just about 35 years ago are now just fine among a large segment of the population, including far too many on the right, who have seen such activities portrayed in the entertainment industry for years now. Today, life imitates art, unfortunately.

In 1826 a group in Washington was preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and wrote to Thomas Jefferson inviting him to participate. Jefferson was in failing health (he died on the 50th anniversary) and wrote a letter, dated June 24, 1826, expressing his regrets that he could not make the trip.

In the letter Jefferson says, "The general spread of the light of science has already laid open to every view the palpable truth, that the mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately, by the grace of God."

Jefferson was no doubt thinking of kings and aristocrats. I don't think he or any of the patriots who won our independence and created our free system of government ever dreamed of a day when entertainers and other celebrities would be seen as those "booted and spurred" and entitled to ride roughshod over everyone else.
