In 1976, a group of cavalrymen met to assess the status of preservation initiatives relating to the history, equipment, literature, traditions, and heritage of the Cavalry. Their findings were not encouraging; many significant reminders of the past presented by artifacts, documents, and photographs of the Cavalry simply vanished or had been discarded, their value unrecognized.

To safeguard the legacy of the Cavalry and to halt the grievous losses diminishing the cultural substance of our country’s rich past, the US Cavalry Association was formed that year. From that small group of cavalrymen, the Association has grown to a diverse and unique organization, national in scope, striving to preserve the Cavalry heritage.

The US Cavalry Association is the proud sponsor of the U.S. Cavalry Museum, located at Fort Riley, Kansas. The U.S. Cavalry Museum is part of the Army Museum System and chronicles the colorful history of the American Mounted Horse Soldier from the Revolutionary War to 1950. The building that houses the Museum was once the headquarters used by General George Armstrong Custer.

GOD BLESS AND PROTECT OUR TROOPS!

TATTOO
(Click)

Must retire – the 0500 0430 Reveille approaches relentlessly. Our Taskmasters vex us with an ever-increasing burden of work. They have sequestered us in a remote chamber known only as “The Land of the Lost”, which bears a banner over the lintel stating:

“ABANDON ALL HOPE, YE WHO ENTER HERE!”

They stand and watch mutely over us as we toil hour after hour without respite.

The Bugler, their minion, his grim visage replete with an evil sneer, already mounts the parapet.

If I can escape their iron grip, I’ll chat with you all on the morrow. I can say no more – they approach!

Do poor Tom some charity, whom the foul fiend vexes!

Good night, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America!

Godspeed our Troops around the Globe – especially those in harm’s way – by virtue of their service and sacrifice we continue to live in Freedom!

When the kid comes home story....

I made a Spanish Tortilla ( a Frittata) that would keep me happy for a couple days whebn the phone rang and my son said he was dropping by; did I want to go shopping or just hang out ?

When he came by, he saw the Spanish Tortilla and said he was glad I was eating healthy.....then he are seven of the eight slices himself.

But on the bright side, he told me he missed my cooking!

I was lucky the cute young wahines were at school that day. A slice of luck.

Woo-Hoo; been there and done that!

The training areas north of the motor pools and barracks are criss-crossed with well defined tank trails that are also well used. During the rainy season, travel on the tank trails could be difficult. Most soldiers supposed that was because of all the mud; failing to comprehend that buffalo roamed those prairies for thousands of years beforehand.

I don’t think we ever had a twister during the 3 years I was there. Something about being positioned between two large bodies of water kept them away; at least, that’s what we were told at the time.

I’m pretty sure they’ve had some around that area, but good
you never saw them. :)

They keep telling us that we don’t have them because we’re
on the edge of the “Caprock” (a very large plateau) which causes an updraft that
keeps them away. Whatever it takes! LOL!

Caprock or Edwards Plateau - does indeed keep the tornadoes away.

We had enough damage from hailstorms while there!

Piper's daddy was born in Manhattan, KS while we were stationed at Ft. Riley. Here he is at a year old, on his birthday, at the Tuttle Creek Reservoir. This large lake is north and east of Ft. Riley.

Good evening, HJ...so you were at Fort Riley, too.

I can imagine the mud after all those buffalo, and years later, hundreds of tanks.
