School Sunscreen Ban Leaves Student Severely Sunburned

Severely sunburned at school, Violet and Zoe Michener came home from field day so burned that their mother rushed them to the hospital.

It was scorching pain that could have been avoided.

Violet and Zoe Michener came home from field day so burned that their mother rushed them to the hospital.

The sisters aren't just fair-skinned. Zoe has a form of albinism that makes her particularly sun-sensitive.

"Yeah, I was crying about my sunburn," Zoe said.

Mother Jesse Michener of Tacoma, Wash. said she regrets not putting sunscreen on them that morning since it was raining.

Even so, doctors recommend re-applying every 2 to 3 hours when outside but that's against their school rules.

"They couldn't even reapply sunscreen without a doctor's note. They couldn't carry that in their backbacks," said Jesse Michener.

The school district said it has to ban sunscreen because it's state law.

Government Libtards always know what's best ... and that is why you silly Freepers should pray that the Supremes do not strike down ObamaCare!

This is a common theme in stories about idiotic behavior of school administrators: they must do X or they cannot do Y because of state law. People who are going to use government schools need to pay more attention to what's going on in their state capitals.

Re the sunburn picture, why was a girl with extreme sun sensitivity wearing a bikini top for a day of outdoor activity at school, I wonder. I'm sensitive to the sun, myself, and I wear clothes that cover me, including long pants and a long-sleeve shirt to Cub Scouts day camp.

My daughter got suspended for cough drops without my COMING IN to the school to sign the form.

Oh, did I say this was HIGH SCHOOL?

They can drive a car, but not take a cough drop unsupervised?

Because most Field Days include water games.

If the school had any sense they would have called off the event, this being reasonably foreseeable. If you cannot furnish protection for it, don’t DO it. Oh, they are cruising for a suing.

Only “whitey” needs sunscreen.

No problem here.

They can get an abortion without a parent’s signature, but aren’t allowed to use sunscreen? Is there anything RIGHT with our schools?

What these girls need now is a CRAZY, wild eyed, slip-and-fall lawyer.

.... if he costs the state and school board enough money defending stupid "decisions" maybe they could be motivated into a little common sense.....

...but then again, maybe not...

The problem with suing over bad policy for state institutions is the jackballs that were responsible are never held accountable. It just punishes the institution and the taxpayer.

Something needs to be done about this. Those responsible need to be held personally accountble, financially and criminally if applicable.

I heard they weren't going to ban it, but they were going to tax the crap out of it, because it's white and it works.

My attitude with such statements is "Produce the state law. Give me a photocopy of the page in the State Code that you are referring to, or email me a link to it. Until you do, I'll be proceeding under the assumption that you are full of it."

Remember when a “Field Day” was going to a business, and learning about what happens in the “real world”? Now a “Field Day” is a day at a waterpark, with taxpayer funds footing this party. Education be damned.

And we wonder why our SAT and ACT scores continue to plummet, why our kids have no ambition to do anything for themselves, and why they have an entitlement mentality.
