Severely sunburned at school, Violet and Zoe Michener came home from field day so burned that their mother rushed them to the hospital.
It was scorching pain that could have been avoided.
Violet and Zoe Michener came home from field day so burned that their mother rushed them to the hospital.
The sisters aren't just fair-skinned. Zoe has a form of albinism that makes her particularly sun-sensitive.
"Yeah, I was crying about my sunburn," Zoe said.
Mother Jesse Michener of Tacoma, Wash. said she regrets not putting sunscreen on them that morning since it was raining.
Even so, doctors recommend re-applying every 2 to 3 hours when outside but that's against their school rules.
"They couldn't even reapply sunscreen without a doctor's note. They couldn't carry that in their backbacks," said Jesse Michener.
The school district said it has to ban sunscreen because it's state law.

The school district said it has to ban sunscreen because it's state law.Yeah, it's banned by state law because it has 'chemicals' in it.
I'd chalk this one up to The Law of Untended Consequences. Morons in state legislatures passing some law to address one thing but affects 97 gazillion other things the morons never even thought about -- but are so obvious they should have.
I know, I've been there with a Bill written by my State Rep and was up for a vote in a couple days.
By the time her bill went through the whole 'committee negotiating process' it didn't even resemble her original Bill and intent and then SHE had to work her butt off to 'Kill Her Own Bill'. I got wind of this final version and called her office to 'express my objections'. She was out but she actually called me back (shock). She explained what happened and what she was now trying to do. Thankfully the Bill was killed and never voted on.Oh and the Untended Consequence I immediately noticed was that if the Bill passed, it would ban tens of thousands of people from ever being able to legally own or possess a firearm and if they already had 'one' they'd HAVE to surrender it (and this in IL where its already bad enough for us). When I mentioned this to her and explained how it would work by this Bill, she was dumbfounded and admitted, "I didn't even think of that".
So I bet this Sun Screen ban is similar due to those 'evil chemicals' that one out of a million might be be allergic to.
LOL Excellent!
Hey, here’s a novel idea - let the parents decide what “chemicals” their children will be allowed to have/use.
"Mr. Smith, Mr. Smith, my nose is starting to look a little shiny. Can I have a hall pass to see the nurse?"
That’s the basis of almost all liberal policy -
somebody craps their pants and we all gotta wear diapers.
If they don’t have a blanket policy,
then their discretion is required.
With discretion comes responsibility for making a choice.
This is what they try to avoid.
They’re actually not “idiots”, they’re cowards.
“eleventy bajillion”
May I use that?
The best day in my life was getting out of school.
The “real world” is so named because cause and effect are related. It’s an atmosphere that is conducive to mental health.
In school, students are insulated from the consequences of their actions, which are often related to meaningless busy-work, to begin with. When actions have no consequences, disorder and confusion reigns.
Just look at the kids exiting these places everyday. Teens don’t have to be this way. They sure as hell weren’t when they began work at age 14.
They employ many, many people, most of them unionized and rock-solid Democrat voters.
Good point - HSLDA reports are full of cases of schools' either being ignorant of or deliberately ignoring state law.
However, in the case at hand, it appears it's true that the state will not allow government school students to apply sunscreen.
I stole it too so sure! ;-)
A minor point, but a field day is usually athletic/physical activity. A field trip is educational tours of businesses, etc. Different activities.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Bureaucrats are not known for anything resembling common sense, intelligence or critical thinking. That’s why they are bureaucrats.
Its the only occupation that demands you be brain dead and stupid.
And BeeHO has increased the number of these mind numbed zombies by a thousand fold.

I agree. Just think if they let any kids use sunscreen and one kid was allergic and had a bad reaction? No one wants to be responsible for something that could be bad or unhealthy.
