Obama’s Pyrrhic Victory
Dick Morris.Com ^ | June 27,2012 | Dick Morris

Today, Barack Obama won the battle but will lose the war. The Supreme Court decision makes Obamacare the central issue in the 2012 election, just like it was in the 2010 election. And we know how that turned out.

The Court has sustained the individual mandate. That imposes on us a mandate: To defeat Obama and take the Senate. Now that is the only way we can kill this horrible law.

Public opinion has rejected this law for two years now by about the same margin: 40% support; 55% oppose. While the Court decision may give the law a short term positive bump, the underlying reality of the costs of the program and the increases in everyone’s health insurance rates it is already triggering will eliminate any near term gain. Ultimately, it will still be 40-55 against the law.

Right now, presidential polls show Romney and Obama both in the mid-40s. The single most unpopular thing Obama has done is the health care law. Now it is going to be the lynchpin issue. It means that the election itself will increasingly be polarized around opinions of the health care law – a fifteen point loser for the Democrats.

In a real sense, the Supreme Court did not let Obama off the hook by striking down the law. Now he will have to defend it during the election.

Remember what this law does. It requires everyone to spend upwards of 7 percent of their income on health insurance or pay a fine of several thousand dollars. Neither is an attractive alternative for the young and the poor who are the president’s political base. And, with the expansion of Medicaid rejected by the Court, the government will not be there to help them. I

It requires everyone to spend upwards of 7 percent of their income on health insurance or pay a fine of several thousand dollars.

The problem is that for the vast majority of people looking to get insurance through this program 7% of AGI isn't going to come anywhere close to buying insurance. Guess who gets to pick up the rest of the tab. We do.

I put a family of 4 with 60k in AGI into a calculator program on a pro-ACA website. The monthly premium came out to $1000 total, with $400 paid by the family, $600 by the government, and a limit on out of pocket deductibles and copays of $6k. By the way, those numbers are about the same as a current federal employee except the federal employees pay $400 every 4 weeks, not every month. The real problem is how the government plans on paying for all these subsidies. My guess would be that the costs of this healthcare plan are going to explode.

You know... that biotch in Orlando may not have to worry after all... about filling her gas tank, paying her mortgage or seeing her Doctor... they may have just won.

I’m getting freaked out tonight, reading all the surrender monkey statements on FR who are waving French flags.

Damn! I thought we had a bunch of patriots on FR who were cut from Founder cloth and ready for a fight, but now I’m not so sure.

We are talking about unemployed and poor who have no money to take from. Many have no bank accounts and no jobs. The number of people meeting those qualifications has exploded under Obama. They have no way to pay. They will be sent to prison.

That was not my comment, but thanks for posting those interesting numbers.

And you are correct. Healthcare costs of the plan will explode and are guaranteed to bankrupt the US. They were fools for not dropping universal health care after 3 nuclear reactors exploded at Fukushima. The number of cancer cases alone will significantly increase just from what has already been released. And the plant is on the verge of being abandoned due to high radiation levels.

If the Republicans have any brains at all, this idea will be central to their campaigns
I have a very strong fear that the Republicans don't have the brains to take advantage of this gift that's been handed to them.

I agree with Morris on this: as an American I see this decision as a tragedy; as a partisan I see it as an opportunity.

But as you say, it is only an opportunity if our side has the brains to take advantage of it.

All we need is 50 senators, with the VP being the tie breaker.

A repeal vote is also a simple majority, but how do you propose to deal with the inevitable Democrat filibuster without 2/3 of the Senate?

Fillibuster is not possible now.
The ball is now in the Republicans’ court. They’ve already scheduled a repeal vote on July 11. Once before the Democrat-controlled Senate was able to scotch the effort by threat of filibuster. Had the mandate stood as mandate they could do so again. But now that it’s a tax, it can be passed by a simple majority.
