I live about 30 miles North of DC and my power went out for about a minute giving me a scare.

With temperatures near 100 today (FRiday) and the next few days, and very humid too, having no power would be hell.

We had a similar storm Monday .... power out two days. We got the one tonight, but it was nothing like Monday when the tops of 3 of our maple trees were broken off, several cedars down, branches & debris everywhere. We were to the south of the worst part of this latest storm - got some winds, heavy rain, lots of lightning, but nothing like Monday’s derecho.

I’m a hundred miles north of DC and on the edge of the storm line which passed through between 10 and 11 pm.

Vivid lightning, heavy downpours, but little wind.

The storms are all to the south now but just past midnight there was a massive rumble of thunder.

Being without power for a minute gave you a scare? What are you going to do when SHTF and there’s no power at all?

I haven’t had power for a few hours now, but that’s okay. Just reading and sometimes Freeping by candlelight. The upstairs zone of my air-conditioning system has been pretty expensively broken for the past few years so I never use the air, and while today was no fun, it wasn’t hell.

Everybody has snarky things to say about preppers, but when there’s a problem we’re perfectly happy.

When the power goes off here, I just crank up the gen set on the old motor home and we go hang out there.

Now you know why the founding fathers placed the nation's capitol where they did. They wanted to keep the politicians out of the seat of power as long as possible.

My mother grew up in DC in the 1920’s and 1930s - before the wide spread use of air conditioning. She said DC had two seasons. When Congress was in session it was noisy and overcrowded. When Congress wasn't in session it was quite and very enjoyable.

Wonder - could we remove air conditioning from all governmental offices as both a cost saving and environmental effort?
