If roadside bombs and other hazards of war don't kill military dogs, senseless government regulations and red tape might. The United States is breeding 100 puppies a year to train for bomb sniffing and other soldierly duties, but many aren't making it back to happy homes because an obscure federal law classifies them as "equipment" rather than personnel -- and makes adopting them a financial and bureaucratic nightmare. A bill to require that the military ship the heroic dogs home and ease potential veterinarian costs for adopting families is currently bogged down in Congress, as dogs continue to be euthanized. In the meantime, at least there is an occasional happy ending.

I’m sure I will be in tears, though, no doubt. I can’t stand to read about or see pics of Laika. Also can’t watch Hachi. Devotion and loyalty are soooo standard for animals, and soooo lacking in humanity as another FReeper said it best earlier (though I think it was on the “Neurotic cat” thread).

If this is about puddles of money, my guess is that the dogs could be transferred to the VA in lieu of therapy money for PTSD. I’d hazard a guess that the transition to civilian life with a buddy in war would be greatly facilitated and at lower cost.
Although I get the gist of your comment, I think it only fair to say that FR has always had moral and just people who have families, and pets, and care about the treatment of pets.
That they would want to post on a thread about killing trained military dogs for no good reason just makes sense.
And MAN's PLACE is deciding whether he thinks the euthanasia is JUST or UNJUST.
If these dogs cannot be 'reassigned' to a new master, that is one justification.
If they cannot be 'retrained' as pets and adopted, that is another justification.
What is more disconcerting to me is that while we EUTHANIZE the dogs, we just let humans like TERRI SCHIAVO die painfully overs weeks deprived of the things we normally provide to dogs.... food and water.
But neither irresponsible treatment of animals nor appreciation for them justifies elevating them to the status of human beings.
True. However, go shoot a police dog. See what reality does for you when you are charged with murder.
There's the way things should be, and there's the way things are. And the gap between the two is getting wider all the time.
Everything from government reads like the warning label on a high risk experimental prescription drug where the potential side effects are worse than the disease.

I should add that we don’t have to be able to connect the dots in order to avoid PETA’s “kill Terri Schiavo” pitfalls. All we have to do is bear in mind what God said about place He assigned to man and the place He assigned to the animals, and both we and our pets will be blessed.
Apparently you've never had any of yours saved by one of these dogs and have instead left the fighting to those better than yourself. So, I kindly request that you STFU.

When his master died, the dog took up watch on his grave and refused to move, depsite the best efforts of townspeople to coax him with food.
They tried to take him home and adopt him but he always returned to his master’s side.
Eventually they gave up and just fed and sheltered him in place, as best as they could.
After years of faithfully guarding his master’s body, he died and they gathered money for a monument to him.
Nobody remembers the man now but Rollo *never* goes without fresh flowers on his grave and as you can see, nearly two hundred years of hands patting his head and back have worn the marble smooth.

He gets posted here quite often, when the occasion arises.

By your own logic, we could’ve averted Terri’s murder by making sure *all* life is held sacred, starting with “lowly” animals.
Because we did not, ‘they” felt free to move up to higher beings.
Remember this when you read of cops shooting harmless dogs because they “felt threatened”.
Once they’ve all become numb to killing dogs [man’s best friend] imagine how easy the transition will be to mankind, itself.

Heartbreaking, but so typical. I’m so glad they made a monument of him. That speaks well of them. So much for those who want to give the “I’m so much better than a dog or any animal” rant on these threads. They have MUCH to learn. MUCH.
