Yitzhak Shamir Dead at 96

Photo: REUTERS Former prime minister Yitzhak Shamir passed away at the age of 96 on Saturday at the care home in which he resided in Tel Aviv.

Shamir served as Israel's seventh prime minister from 1983 to 1984 and again from 1986 to 1992.

He also served as Knesset speaker, opposition head and was among the founders of the Mossad. He was among the leaders of the Jewish underground group Lehi in mandatory Palestine.

Shamir lived in a care home for the last several years because of his poor health, He leaves behind two children and five grandchildren. Shamir lost his wife Shlomit last year at the age of 88.

The former prime minister was expected to be laid to rest on Monday.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Shelly Yechimovich both praised Shamir for dedicating his life to the State of Israel and sent their condolences to his family.

His leadership in the Lehi is stain on this man’s character. Since the Lehi attacked British forces way before the end of WW2, Shamir was a de facto ally of the Nazis, no different than IRA gunman of the 40’s. For any Jew to be sniping at British forces at the same time their comrades were landing at Normandy and then later fighting in the streets of Arnhem is a disgrace.

He was pretty far gone with Alzheimer’s. It was said in his bio that six years ago he could no longer recognize visitors at the nursing home.

In 2004, in one last cheap shot against him, the government led by his own party refused to pick up his nursing home bills.

Are you delusional? The British WERE the Nazis in the Holy Land, importing Arabs and deporting Jews to rebalance Israel, hanging Jews who resisted from trees, and later rejecting tens of thousands of Jewish refugees fleeing Hitler from entering Israel, who later went back to their deaths at Auschwitz. I guess it would have made you happy for the little Jews to silently go to their graves under the thumb of the tyrannical British. Thankfully they didn't and hung the British pigs from trees until they cried uncle. What the Brits did in Israel had nothing to do with the European theater, and in fact the Arabs who the Brits loved so much were themselves allies with Hitler (see below). Not only Jews were being prevented from going to Israel...many Euro nations prevented Jews from coming in after the Nazis took over Germany

If the US did not liberate Germany, we probably would have never known the horrors of the concentration camps. The Euros, with longer and ingrained hatred for the Jews, probably would have denied their existence

There were reasons why Jews attacked the British in Palestine.

I did not always agree with every decision Shamir made, but he was honest and dedicated his life to the formation and then survival of Israel.

He was also instrumental in forming the Mossad- an agency that has proven it’s worth on a number of occasions.
