U.S. navigating the Twilight Zone now
The Morning Journal ^ | July 1, 2012 | Editor's Column

Posted on 07/01/2012 8:50:57 AM PDT by Smokeyblue

From coast to coast, it didn’t matter what time zone you lived in on Thursday; on that day, Americans all entered the Twilight Zone, with the Supreme Court’s 5-4 upholding of Obamacare, and congressional Democrats’ walkout on the contempt vote against Attorney General Eric Holder.

Whether we emerge from this Twilight Zone period whole as a nation or spiral downward into deepening political and social madness remains to be seen.

Those two bizarre events together deepened the certainty that this coming November’s 2012 election is as pivotal as the election of 1860 that preceded the American Civil War.

Back then, the North and South split over sharply different visions of what the still-young country should be and how it should deal with its original sin of slavery.

This year, the nation is split by mutually exclusive visions of whether the United States will keep Constitutionally enshrined individual liberty and limited central government as its core principles. Or will the Constitution, in effect, be discarded and individual liberty be locked in the freedom-suffocating embrace of a socialist nanny federal government.

Chief Justice John Roberts’ strange, unexpected ruling that saved Obamacare in its Supreme Court test was right out of Alice in Wonderland.

Roberts claimed it’s constitutional for Obamacare to compel Americans to buy health insurance because the unconscionable, stiff federal penalty for not doing so is a “tax.”

But Obamacare’s backers, from Obama on down, have tried to deny it’s a tax all along. The Nancy Pelosi Congress would deny it passed a tax on Americans in Obamacare.

If it’s a tax only because the chief justice says it’s a tax, then that’s akin to taxation without representation, because the people didn’t elect Roberts.

This is precisely correct.

Wait! It's a cook book!

Apparently benign alien emissaries show mankind how to end the misery of war, plague and famine. The Kanamits, nine-foot tall aliens, arrive on Earth with one lofty goal: To Serve Man. They end war, they end famine. They make the military wonder: what's the catch?

The Constitution was written as a contract with the purpose of preventing civil war.

Ultimately, the majority (who selects representatives, the president, and the SCOTUS) are only voluntarily bound to the Constitution by principle.

Over the last 100 years, the U.S. Constitution of 1786, which created a Republic of free states and individuals, has been supplanted by a central government of unlimited power, checked only by the shame of the majority. And with every passing day, that majority becomes more and more shameless.

Yes and this time around its a very different scenario from 1860. Almost all of the military is out of the country fighting in foreign wars. When the SHTF this time the Feds are going to have a hard slog agains’t the states who stand up for their sovereignty. DHS and TSA are not going to fare very well when the lead begins to fly.

True. In 1861 there effectively was no United States military.

Except for the equipment, the size of the US military compared to the size of the general population is miniscule. Almost insignificant when you think that half of them would resign or dessert in a hot civil war scenario.

A destroyer has come to destroy America.

And most Americans don't even realize he is doing just that. Instead they think he is really cool. Politically ignorant Americans now outnumber Americans who understand what is happening to us, and that ignorance is going to destroy our country.

After the Hillary Clinton Administration and its kow-towing bipartisan Congress of the ‘90s decreed the permanent pumping of so much federal funding to local governments to break up working class families and toss the fathers out of the economy, it was all over. Most politically active people are hard socialists in special interests.

Have fun. Enjoy the slide. It’s about time.

Good article. Its conclusion:

"That’s all a great worry. But an even greater worry is that reaction to this news shows many in the voting public see nothing wrong with this picture. What that clash of vision means for our nation’s future is the greatest worry of all now."

It's more dire than even he concludes. The reason many in the voting public see nothing wrong with this picture is that many in the voting public have never heard of "Fast and Furious," and have no idea who Chief Justice Roberts is or what has happened. Millions of Americans are willfully ignorant of the facts that our country, our Constitution, are teetering on the brink of national suicide. And these people vote.

Well thats true. I think in 1860 there were about 16,000 US Army regular troops. Not a lot by todays standard but the population at the time was only about 31 million. But I see your point.
