~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico

Holloman Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located six miles southwest of the central business district of Alamogordo, a city in Otero County, New Mexico, United States. The base was named in honor of Col. George V. Holloman, a pioneer in guided missile research. It is the home of the 49th Fighter Wing (49 FW) of the Air Combat Command (ACC).

Air Combat Command is the primary force provider of combat airpower to America's warfighting commands. To support global implementation of national security strategy, ACC operates fighter, bomber, reconnaissance, battle-management and electronic-combat aircraft. It also provides command, control, communications and intelligence systems, and conducts global information operations.

The 49th Wing - host wing at Holloman Air Force Base - supports national security objectives by deploying worldwide to support peacetime and wartime contingencies. The wing provides combat-ready Airmen, F-22 Raptors, and trains MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper pilots and sensor operators.

Additionally, the wing delivers Air Transportable Clinics and Basic Expeditionary Airfield Resources while providing support to more than 17,000 military and civilian personnel to include German Air Force Flying Training center operations.

The Wing deploys combat-ready and mission-support forces supporting Air Expeditionary Force operations, Global War on Terrorism and peacetime contingencies; trains pilots in the F-22A and the T-38A aircraft; and provides support to over 18,000 personnel to include German Air Force Tornado operations. The wing has a proud history of service in World War II, Korea, Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia and NATO-led Operation Allied Force.

Along with the 49th FW, the 46th Test Group , part of the 46th Test Wing from Eglin Air Force Base, Florida is based at Holloman. The 46th TG is an Air Force Materiel Command unit responsible for operational testing and evaluation of new equipment and systems proposed for use by these forces. Current initiatives include advanced self-protection systems for combat aircraft, aircrew life support systems, aerial reconnaissance improvements, new armament and weapons delivery systems, and improved maintenance equipment and logistics support.

Love Holloman, spent two years there, 1972-1974 when my dad was serving in Vietnam.

Never knew any of the particulars about the base though.

Thanks for the info.

May God bless and keep our troops safe.

Hi All From DnUnDa!
Our Guys Playing With A Brit Pilot.

There's Tailgating Then There's Tailgaiting!

A British Royal Air Force Typhoon pilot flies up to the back door of a C-130 (Hercules) for a photo opportunity.

He radios, "How much closer do you want me?"

They radio, "How much closer can you get?"

Photobucket

Pilot Radios, Close enough?

You have to be a tad mad to be a fighter pilot in today's world! but, even crazier to be a photographer looking down those sucking intakes!

Thanks very much, Kathy! And thanks very much to you and Lauren for tonight's Road Trip to Holloman AFB, New Mexico!

*HUGS*

I had a few business trips out to the Land of Enchantment in the early 80's but never made it to Holloman. My New Mexico experience is confined to a few days in Albuquerque and a few days in Santa Fe. I liked Santa Fe - stayed at a hotel known as La Fonda - wonderful!

G'Day, Sky! I had something that looked like that crawling up my tailpipe last night! I was in the right lane of I-95 doing over 80 mph and I still wasn't going fast enough for him!

Aloha again Night Owl! ((HUGS))

Mostly sunny today but can't say the same for the mainland. Only got through to two out of five yesterday which worries me a bit.

Hilo? You never know what coming over the horizon but with a practiced eye looking in the right direction, one can tell how much time before it gets to ya.

Problem is having to stand outside and watch and not be caught shipping.

SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL

Monday, July 2, 8 PM Pacific (11 PM Eastern)

Broadcast live at KING-FM

Beethoven: Variations for Violin, Cello and Piano in E-flat, Op. 44
Erin Keefe, violin
Edward Arron, cello
Jeewon Park, piano

Edward and Jeewon are married, and I’ve had delightful conversations about chamber music with Edward. I also know Erin quite well. These are three great musicians, and this will be the first time I’ve heard this piece.

Bartok: Sonata #1 for Violin and Piano, Sz. 75
James Ehnes, violin
Jon Kimura Parker, piano

Jimmy is the new Artistic Director of the festival, and he is one of the world’s great violinists. I count Jimmy and his wife Kate as friends, and they have a brand new daughter. Jackie is a wonderful virtuoso with a great sense of humor. This piece will be rough on the ear, and this will be the first time I’ve heard it

Brahms: Quintet for Piano and Strings in F minor, Op. 34
Marc-Andre Hamelin, piano
Andrew Wan, violin
Karen Gomyo, violin
David Harding, viola
Bion Tsang, cello

I know David and Bion. For those who followed my Brahms series at the Canteen, I went into this piece in detail. It is one of the great warhorses of the repertory and a real crowd pleaser. Enjoy!
