Preamble to the Declaration of Independence

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Fireworks And Freedom

Thanks to the ingenuity of our Chinese friends, we here in the US celebrate our independence this month with massive displays of colorful fireworks.

Every year when we sing our national anthem and enjoy the vibrant patterns created by “bombs bursting in air,” I remind myself that most bombs are deadly, not beautiful like the fireworks display. Although both use similar ingredients, one is intended to kill; the other to entertain. In this metaphor we see an example of how something can be used for both good and evil. In the hands of capable, careful, and caring people, something dangerous becomes glorious. But the opposite is also true.

Freedom—the very thing we celebrate with fireworks—can also be used for good and evil. As believers in Christ, we are free from the restrictive Mosaic law, but the Bible warns us not to use our spiritual freedom for selfish purposes: “Do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (Gal. 5:13).

Not everyone has political and religious freedom, but all believers in Christ have spiritual freedom. We must not use it as a weapon to impose our will on others but to display the glory of God’s will.

Freedom doesn’t give us the right to do what we please, but to do what pleases God.

In the coldest and darkest days of the American Revolution, General George Washington raised his prayers for the survival of his beleaguered Army and of the new Nation. Nothing really special except for the fireworks show at Coconut Island Maybe my son found a place to buy some sparklers and sky rockets for the young wahines but looking around town the last few days it's been pretty dismal. All that the enviros do to preserve air quality in the middle of the Pacific makes people mad.

The Grey-Haired Brigade



They like to refer to us as senior citizens, old fogies, geezers, and in some cases dinosaurs. Some of us are "Baby Boomers" getting ready to retire. Others have been retired for some time. We walk a little slower these days and our eyes and hearing are not what they once were. We have worked hard, raised our children, worshiped our God and grown old together. Yes, we are the ones some refer to as being over the hill, and that is probably true. But before writing us off completely, there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration.

In school we studied English, history, math, and science which enabled us to lead America into the technological age. Most of us remember what outhouses were, many of us with firsthand experience. We remember the days of telephone party-lines, 25 cent gasoline, and milk and ice being delivered to our homes. For those of you who don't know what an icebox is, today they are electric and referred to as refrigerators. A few even remember when cars were started with a crank. Yes, we lived those days.

We are probably considered old fashioned and out-dated by many. But there are a few things you need to remember before completely writing us off. We won World War II, fought in Korea and Viet Nam . We can quote The Pledge of Allegiance, and know where to place our hand while doing so. We wore the uniform of our country with pride and lost many friends on the battlefield. We didn't fight for the Socialist States of America , we fought for the "Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave." We wore different uniforms but carried the same flag. We know the words to the Star Spangled Banner, America, and America the Beautiful by heart, and you may even see some tears running down our cheeks as we sing. We have lived what many of you have only read about in history books and we feel no obligation to apologize to anyone for America.

Yes, we are old and slow these days but rest assured, we have at least one good fight left in us. We have loved this country, fought for it, and died for it, and now we are going to save it. It is our country and nobody is going to take it away from us. We took oaths to defend America against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and that is an oath we plan to keep. There are those who want to destroy this land we love but, like our founders, there is no way we are going to remain silent.

It was mostly the young people of this nation who elected Obama and the Democratic Congress. You fell for the "Hope and Change" which in reality was nothing but "Hype and Lies." You have tasted socialism and seen evil face to face, and have found you don't like it after all. You make a lot of noise, but most are all too interested in their careers or "Climbing the Social Ladder" to be involved in such mundane things as patriotism and voting. Many of those who fell for the "Great Lie" in 2008 are now having buyer's remorse. With all the education we gave you, you didn't have sense enough to see through the lies and instead drank the 'Kool-Aid.' Now you're paying the price and complaining about it. No jobs, lost mortgages, higher taxes, and less freedom. This is what you voted for and this is what you got. We entrusted you with the Torch of Liberty and you traded it for a paycheck and a fancy house.

Well, don't worry youngsters, the Grey-Haired Brigade is here, and in 2012 we are going to take back our nation. We may drive a little slower than you would like but we get where we're going, and in 2012 we're going to the polls by the millions. This land does not belong to the man in the White House nor to the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. It belongs to "We the People" and "We the People" plan to reclaim our land and our freedom. We hope this time you will do a better job of preserving it and passing it along to our grandchildren. So the next time you have the chance to say the Pledge of Allegiance, Stand up, put your hand over your heart, honor our country, and thank God for the old geezers of the "Grey-Haired Brigade."

This Nation is dearer to me than my own life.

I fought for it willingly and proudly, as my ancestors have done since the American Revolution, and as my family continues to do to this very day.

In my youth, I spilled my blood for it on the Field of Battle, in a far-off land, in a war that was scorned by many of my contemporaries, a war in which we were victorious in the field, and a war in which we were betrayed by a coterie of spineless politicos, by the media, i.e. The Fifth Column, by academia, and by the Hollywood elite.

In my old age, the jackals gather again, seeking once more to steal a victory won by another generation of Americans, seeking to change our Nation into a Socialist state in which we are all tools of the collective rather than free men and women, seeking by every artifice known to man to undo the American Revolution.

Though I am old and weak, I would willingly fight for our Beloved Nation once again, and, if necessary, give my life for it if doing so would advance the cause of Liberty.

I say this without boast or apology – I am no better or worse than the millions of American men and women who have answered the Nation’s call, and I am not a hero. I am simply one of a multitude of Americans who did his or her duty.

KNOW THIS: I will not sit idly by while Marxists, atheists, perverts and traitors work their evil machinations to undo the heroic efforts and sacrifices of over two centuries of Patriots and thereby bring this great Nation to its knees.

May God continue to Bless and protect the United States of America – A Beacon of Freedom shining through the darkness of a World beset by Tyranny!

May God Bless and Protect our Gallant Troops of all Services – men and women - combat and non-combat – of whatever MOS. By virtue of their service and sacrifice we continue to enjoy the benefits of Freedom!

July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, my 3-greats grandfather, Cpl. William Murphy, Battery "C", 5th U.S. Artillery Regiment, was wounded by shrapnel at the Clump of Trees during Pickett's Charge, the climactic point of the Battle of Gettysburg. Wounded in the leg, he was in hospital at Summit Hill Army Hospital in Philadelphia for six weeks. He returned to duty with the Battery and served the remainder of his enlistment, being honorably discharged in September 1864 near Petersburg, Virginia.

He retired to Philadelphia, where he lived until December, 1907. More of the story - particularly regarding his son-in-law, Cpl. John R. Brison, 1st Virginia Light Artillery - at another time.
