Illegal immigrants hope IU improves their future

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Fred Diego is sitting on a bench in the hot sunshine. It's a summer afternoon outside the Indiana Memorial Union, with students on their laptops, seeking shade and drinking Starbucks beverages.

Right now, 20-year-old Diego is leaning back in his seat and laughing about discrimination.

"Noooo," he says, when asked whether strangers would guess he's a good student. "People don't even think I go to college."

Then his expression changes, and his voice loses the laughter.

"That's the kind of discrimination we face," he says, searching for the right words, "A general disregard for our capacity."

Diego has a full-ride to IU. He's also an illegal immigrant.

Originally from San Nicolas, Mexico, Diego grew up in Chicago and graduated from George Rogers Clark High School in Hammond. His parents brought him to the U.S. when he was not yet 3 years old.

"It's not like we had a choice," Cristian Delgado, a friend, full-ride scholarship recipient and fellow illegal immigrant says, entering the conversation. Delgado's family left Mexico City when he was 7, and raised him in Indianapolis. "What was I supposed to do -- say, 'Naw, Dad, don't bring me'?"

Diego nods, agreeing. "You're a 2-year-old kid. You can't.

"That's one thing about Latin Americans; we have these really strong family ties. ... They brought us here so we could be a family, so we could thrive as one."

Diego knows his parents broke the law by coming to the U.S. without papers, but when he speaks about their sacrifice, you can see the respect he has for it.

"They gave up their families," he said. "My dad knew coming here that he wasn't going to be there when his mom died, when his dad died.

But to most kids here, that wasn't an issue until they turned 16 and tried to get a job and realized they were undocumented.. I do not believe these kids are in the dark about their Immigration status.Their parents coach them on how to act and what to say, to never let no one know their parents are here illegally from Mexico. They do not find out by accident, they just happen to be here illegally. "What are we going to do with our degrees?" Use them back in your home lands, they have work, for people with degrees and being educated they can help make their country a better place.

In one sentence they claim to have strong family ties and two sentences later he admits his parents left their families behind in Mexico. Can't have it both ways.

They need to prove their strong family ties by joining their family in Mexico. GO HOME!!!!!

“”What are we going to do with our degrees?”

*

You mean those degrees which were paid for by the taxpaying gringos?

Apparently he doesn’t have much thought for the countless thousands who went through the process, filled out all the forms, applied, waited their turn, took the tests, and did it according to the law.

Or the others on hold because the immigrant lists are being overwhelmed with those who do it illegally.

But, hey, what does he care about the others he’s displacing; he’s got his.

And thanks to the Democrats, he can even indulge himself in a bit of wry political humor in the local paper.

Life in America is good for an illegal immigrant, thank you very much, suckers.

I have actually known such people, and the truth is that they are de facto Americans. They are not Mexicans, know nobody in Mexico, many have zero memories of Mexico, and some know little or no Spanish. They were educated in American elementary schools, junior high and high schools.

If they are forcibly sent back to Mexico, girls will either be forced into prostitution or slavery. Boys can either become soldiers for the drug cartels or die. They would be as lost as if any American raised child was sent to a non-English speaking foreign, third world country.

It is very easy for some Americans to say “Kick them all out!”, and not give a damn if they are brutalized or killed, even if they are children. If you believe this, you need to reexamine your values and morals.

The bottom line is that due to the malfeasance of the US government, bribed by interests that wanted cheap labor, the southern border was kept open to all comers for decades.

Those who took advantage of this malfeasance are not evil, excepting those who are violent criminal offenders, and so there must be some recognition that common sense needs to dictate their futures.

America is more than happy to allow in legal immigrants, yet in the final analysis, many of these Mexicans have done everything that legal immigrants did and have integrated into our society. So it is not intolerable that their be some way that, without having to leave the US, they can get legal citizenship.

This does not have to be easy or cheap, but its effect will be to turn de facto Americans into de jure Americans. And by doing so, to finally end a longstanding, expensive and contentious argument.

I found the right words for you, young master Diego.
You’re here “in violation of and disregard for US immigration and naturalization laws”.
You’re not a tourist, visitor or guest.
You are an illegal alien—a Mexican citizen—and you have been mooching off Americans long enough.

As an Illinois citizen, I’m paying for these free full rides and I resent the hell out of it. I’ve had to pay the full ride for my 4 children who are now on their own and I have two more coming up, who also won’t be eligible for a “free ride” because their parents are citizens.

I don’t even want a free ride for my kids, I can pay for them all on my own but I damn sure resent having to pay for the criminal Mexican’s free rides.

Let’s make this deal, deport their criminal coyote parents back to Mexico. They are used to the poverty and can speak the language. Anyway, seems they lied to their kids too.

Parents who lie, steal, and don't think of their children's future: great role models.

The best approach is to use the law of diminishing returns.

To start with, the long view is that the problem is starting to resolve itself for three reasons. The first is that the Plan Puebla Panama resulted in a lot of Mexicans from southern Mexico being kicked off their land and told to go North, hopefully to the US. This was a nasty trick by the Mex government and caused a huge surge in illegal aliens.

But it is winding down. It was a “globalism” pipe dream and is pretty well defunct.

The second thing is that Mexican demographics. Their birthrate has plummeted to about 2.3 children per family, which is stability level. Without a growing population, there is much less impulse to migrate. Wages will have to go up, and their economy will do better.

Third is that the cartel war is making a pretty effective buffer, which when combined with negative publicity about the US, means that far fewer will be willing to make the effort.

The medium view is that erecting the wall on the half dozen major corridors used by illegal aliens will strongly inhibit crossing, as much of the border terrain is pretty impassable even in winter. So this is a very cost effective means to reducing the total number of crossers.

Putting up wall on the secondary corridors is a lot more expensive, but still eliminates a lot of crossers, so is still a good idea. Beyond that is extremely expensive and accomplishes little against common illegals, so is best done to keep out the drug smugglers.

After this, the question is *finally* how to deal with those already here. And this is where the law of diminishing returns comes into its own.

There is general agreement that the priority should be to boot out hardened criminals and international gangsters, like MS-13, the Mexican Mafia, and Cartel personnel. But there are so many of them that Mexico is begging us not to kick out so many, so fast, because as soon as they cross the border they turn into Cartel soldiers.

The way around this problem might be bureaucratic. That is, schedule them for deportation, but set up paperwork hurdles for their expulsion, and keep them in what amounts to high security prisons just north of the border.

This means they can be sent back to Mexico in an orderly way, flying them to Mexico City, so they are not just tossed into the arms of the Cartels, but are 1500 miles away.

Arizona, btw, uses this trick for “voluntary repatriations”, with free one-way flights to Mexico City for any illegal who wants them. Very few who take up the offer ever return to the US, and it is actually cheaper than the process of “just kicking them across the border”.

After getting out the really bad criminals, the next group are those who have not integrated and don’t want to integrate or become US citizens, but live in barrios up here and remain Mexicans, while sucking down government aid and health care.

These people are an expensive pain in the butt who need to be deported. Fortunately they cluster together in barrios like South Central LA, and their unwillingness to live around Americans makes them easier to round up.

Next, there are a number who are “good Mexicans”, want to become US citizens and integrate, are trying to work and not sponge, have lived in the US for many years, and have children who are US citizens.

These are excellent candidates to become US citizens, but right now are exploited for cheap, sub minimum wage labor, and often cheated out of their wages. A good solution for them is green cards, which will piss off the scum employers, as they will be covered by US labor laws. But they also need some means for in country application for citizenship, which right now is a nightmare.

This should not be free or cheap. Most are willing to shell out several thousand dollars, pay back taxes, and do a lot of hard work to get citizenship.

A subset of this group are their already legal children, who are US citizens by birth. Most of them are entirely integrated into the US, and are willing to support their parents efforts to become citizens. Very high quality immigrants even compared to those who have entered by using the cumbersome existing system.

So, put it all together, a more complex solution ends up with the US getting good, hard working immigrants, getting rid of violent criminal scum, ending the vast majority of future cross border illegal immigration, and getting new citizens in an orderly manner, with an annual quota, and not having to shell out a ton of money for welfare leeches.

What’s not to like?

If you believe this, you need to reexamine your values and morals.

My morals and values are just fine. If they managed to learn English, they can learn Spanish.

If they are forcibly sent back to Mexico, girls will either be forced into prostitution or slavery. Boys can either become soldiers for the drug cartels or die.

Bullcrap. Utter, unadulterated, hystericall progressive, liberal bullcrap. Kick them and their leeching parents out this fricking minute. Deport them to their country of origin and let them stand in line like every body else.
