Pro-secular group going nationwide, gearing up for election

A national secular organization is in a frenetic push to ensure that the voices of atheists, agnostics and “freethinkers” are heard in statehouses across the country and in the presidential election in the fall.

The Secular Coalition of America plans to have statewide chapters in virtually all 50 states by the end of 2012.

“Recently, we’ve seen some of the most egregious bills commingling religion and government at the state level,” spokeswoman Lauren Youngblood said. “If we’re going to fight some of this stuff, we have to fight it at state capitols.”

The D.C.-based group, which will outline its plans for national expansion on Thursday, intends to fight pro-religious legislation on the state and national level.

One example: a bill passed in Virginia this year allowing faith-based adoption agencies to enact a “conscience clause” that allows them to turn away potential applicants based on their sexual orientation if it runs counters to their religious beliefs.

The group also has concerns about what it sees as pro-religious biases in President Obama’s health care overhaul. The coalition held a Lobby Day for Reason in March, when 200 people gathered on Capitol Hill to raise awareness and talk about discrimination in the Affordable Care Act.

Prohibition as it pertains to religion is at the federal level. Unless the states also specifically ban endorsing a religion, then I don’t see what the problem is.

But if they’re targeting Islam, then I may support what they’re doing...

The temptation to burn atheists at the stake for heresy is getting more and more tempting.

It would vindicate their victim status and solve the annual Christmas law suit annoyance.

I can't condone the Spanish Inquisition, but I understand it :-)

This garbage is coming up partly because a Mormon is running against an adherent of BLT and partly because of a “evangelical” strain of atheism that will tolerate no disagreement and certainly no traditional Christianity. Typical that they won’t go after Islam. Islam will strike back violently and rule by fear.

"Prohibition as it pertains to religion is at the federal level."

OMG. The only prohibition there was related to religion is that the government is prohibited from screwing around with religion or establishing a State religion. Given that King Barry is dictating morals and ethics for everyone, King Barry has essentially established a State religion by defining what you are no longer allowed to believe.

You can no longer believe that it's immoral and anti-Christ to murder children in the womb and to be an accessory to such murders before, during, or after the fact without running afoul of the State. King Barry has dictated that you're going to pay to support such murder no matter what you believe.

Like all the dictators before him, he's put the entire machinery of the state behind making sure you do not live according to what you believe if he doesn't agree with it and are imprisoned if refuse to put tribute to Caesar above tribute to God.

Most of the people in this country voted their wallet for the past seven decades and now Uncle wants a piece of the butt right along with the wallet on their hip. Pretending that hiding behind States Rights will help is just plain stupid when a county school can't have a Christmas tree in the lobby because it offends an atheist all the way across the country.

Does anything good/honest/decent EVER come out of DC?

On the other hand, I’m somewhat thankful all the haters
are so comfortable showing their cards.

The new religion of the anti-god. Those who don’t believe are going to turn the rest of us into clones of themselves.

No thanks. I love God and will believe in him until my death.

Really? This you find to be a problem?
Our Country is bankrupt both monetarily and morally and you have the time and energy to work against a good law such as this? Guess as they say you are part of the problem!

We don’t have a ‘political’ crisis in this nation, we have a moral crisis. How does a society define itself and what rules will be agreed upon?
We are going down the road of moral relativism and anything goes as long as a majority can be convinced of its benefit.

27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a “religious crutch.”

28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of “separation of church and state.”

More of Lenin’s useful idiots at work.
