A plan that offers Obama a fighting chance
The Washington Post ^ | July 5, 2012 | Jonathan Rauch

At this point in 1980, Jimmy Carter was on the path to oblivion but didn’t know it. Barack Obama may share Carter’s fate if he doesn’t change course soon.

The 1980 presidential race was neck and neck until the end. It finally broke for Ronald Reagan when voters concluded that Carter could not cope with the economy and that Reagan, despite his conspicuous flaws as a candidate, was a viable alternative.............

This election will be decided largely by independent voters, most of whom can probably tell you that Mitt Romney’s economic plan is to repeal Obamacare and shrink the government. It may not make much sense, but it’s clear. Ask what Obama’s plan is, and they won’t be certain. They will know, however, that what he has done hasn’t worked. And by the fall, many independents will have made up their minds.

The president’s failure, so far, to show that he understands the scope of the economy’s problems and knows how to fix them does not stem from having nothing to say: investment in education, energy, innovation and infrastructure are reasonable things. But they are also slow-acting, small-bore stuff. Such talk does not include additional economic stimulus, an element that many economists, especially Democratic-leaning ones, consider crucial to prevent a double-dip recession. Nor does it deal realistically with long-term growth in spending.

So Obama should draw a map and send it to Capitol Hill in the form of a bill — a president’s strongest statement that he intends action. A big legislative proposal can frame the issue and paint Obama’s intentions in bold colors. It should include three elements:..........

All the polls, all the numbers compared to past elections means little when you sit in the Whitehouse with agents placed all through the highest cabinets.

Can Obama win the election?

What election.

Postponed due to an act of aggression by Iran comes to mind, an assination attempt, or rather several upon key electors, a manufactured right wing coup also comes to mind.

It would be far better for the country to just perform a popular vote ahead of the traditional election, dump the GOP planned chain of events, make an unexpected moved, even an illogical move.

“It finally broke for Ronald Reagan when voters concluded that Carter could not cope with the economy...”

As I recall it, it was the embassy debacle in Iran that did it.

I have no plans to support the Marxist. I’ve had enough Marxism for a lifetime — it completely sucks!

3 Houses, folks. And we’ll be the landlords. What do ya’ say?

"As I recall it, it was the embassy debacle in Iran that did it."

It was a combination of the economy, JIMMAS ineptness, and the embassy debacle.
The polls were very similar to today. I didn't believe them then and I don't believe them NOW.

There is a a big difference between Carter and Obama. One was a simple minded fool - the other is a wannabe despot.

People who keep thinking that Obama is "bothered" by our crumbling economy are deluded. Obama and his cabal are determined to bring the American people to their knees if only to show fealty to the federal govt.

They have been managing the decline. Allowing it to go into free fall won't happen unless the bastard is re-elected. Then the communists in the WH will take over. He will get to appoint more SC justices and the nation, as we grew up in, will be over.

It was also one question Reagan kept asking:

"Are you better off today or 4 years ago."

I suspect you are right - but you know the media . . . . they just love to re-write history in a way that makes the Dem look like the innocent victim of circumstances beyond their control. Let’s not remind people that Carter was a dismal failure with not just the economy but in terms of making America into a weak-kneed laughing stock worldwide. I’m sure the media doesn’t want the voters to draw any parallels between weak-kneed Carter and the current bowing-scraping, America hating occupant of the White House.

More Democrats bail on Obama’s convention and refuse to endorse him........."It’s tougher to sell the “too busy campaigning to waste time at the convention” excuse when you’re talking about candidates in the very state where the convention is being held. In fact, Kissell represents the 8th Congressional District, where Charlotte is located. Furthermore, a busy schedule of campaign activities doesn’t explain why these folks refuse to endorse Obama for re-election."....

I still see tons of obamabots who act like a cult. We are not the same nation as we were in 1980.

I used to think that, too. But I’ve seen far too much cuddling up with evil over his many years to think that of Carter any longer.

That is the way to get some insight into how truly unpopular Obama is, rather than a bunch of ginned up polls. Look at all the areas where sitting Dems do not want him to appear with him, and will not be seen anywhere near him.

No, the embassy seizure happened more than a year before the 1980 election. Carter always blamed Ted Kennedy for challenging him for the Dem nomination, despite the fact that Ted flopped.

“It was also one question Reagan kept asking:
‘Are you better off today or 4 years ago.’ “

Very true. Just as James Carville kept Clinton on message with, “The economy, stupid” in 1992. Even Obama’s “Hope and Change” was effective with a US public tired of eight years of declining personal income and perpetual war under George W. Bush.

A singular message, targeted directly at the opponent’s key weakness, and repeated ad nauseam can be highly effective in a political campaign. Does anyone know what Romney’s theme (core message) is?

The Obamabots are everywhere.

Best to use sub freezing cold hard facts, hopefully they won’t have the fortitude to defend their misplaced ideology.

First off, just what will be the ultimate outcome of supporting a socialist utopia in America, to what purpose will it make a better life for everyone, by making everyone exactly equal?

By killing anyone who dares to be better, smarter, more affluent?
