This election year, Team Obama’s angle is to be “the little campaign that could” by portraying the Romney campaign as having all the cash and theirs as the one whose donations come in three dollars at a time from people who just want to have a cup of coffee with Middle Class Joe™. Hardly a day goes by without the Obama campaign putting out another “I’ll be outspent” email (the numbers suggest anything but) rallying supporters to dig deeper.
In order to play the underdog, Obama isn’t only claiming he’ll be outspent this year, but revising history to say he was also outspent in 2008:
“You know what, I might be worried about all this money being spent if it wasn’t for my memories of previous campaigns. That first campaign I ran, that last campaign I ran in 2008, I’ve been outspent before,” Obama said a campaign event in Pittsburgh on Friday afternoon.
As always, it depends on what your definition of “outspent” is:

Trust me, the Saudis are giving him millions. Why do u think gas prices are going down too? To make Obama look good! After he is elected again (God forbid) the prices will go right back up. As a paid tax preparer of many years, my least favorite question of the interview is the “Public Financing of Presidential Campaigns” and trying to make this REQUIRED selection clear to my client. I recall VERY WELL which major party candidates in 2008 PROMISED to follow this policy and which one WELSHED on his promise - hint it was not the wealthy Republican.
So Mr President, you say you got out-spent in 2008? The facts say that only if you lump together all of the spending by all of the primary candidates of all groups and then compare that total to yours, it might be true and still be as false as Clinton’s deconstruction of ‘is’.
I remember my first campaign.
I remember my last campaign.
I have been outspent in the past.
Technically (I think) each statement is true. But clearly he chose his words carefully to give the distinct impression that he was outspent in 2008. He is mendacious -- intentionally deceiving gullible fools.

Seems to me more like Obama is insecure rather than playing the underdog.
I have been a paid tax preparer for the last 2 years. I also worked in the year-around office April - June this year. It has been a very educational experience.
I completed over 150 tax returns this tax season. Over 90% of my clients said NO on the “Public Financing of Presidential Campaigns” question. I try to steer clear of politics when I am with a client. A lot of them bring up politics on their own and most of these were very unhappy with Obama.
BTW, I passed the IRS Registered Tax Return Preparer (RTRP) exam 2 months ago. I was expecting a more difficult test.
Being a tax preparer, I’m surprised that you have met even ONE Obama supporter.
My office is in a conservative part of North Dallas. The Obama supporters are probably the clients with a huge refund because they have AGI $15000 - $25000 with at least 3 qualifying children under 17 and the Earned Income Credit.
On the other end of the spectrum, I have been surprised by the number of clients with wage income > $60,000 and no interest/investment income.
Obama has a new Pity Card, now that his Race Card is overdrawn and won’t accept any more charges.
Obama conveniently ignored the vast sums being spent on his behalf using taxpayer dimes. For example, the tens of millions explicitly appropriated for DHHS to promote Obamacare. Obamacare was enacted more than 2 years ago, yet suddenly in 2012 DHHS felt compelled to educate the public on its contents? Very convenient.
Likewise, much of Obama’s jetting around the country is bankrolled via taxpayers even though everyone recognizes that most of his “policy” speeches are thinly veiled political campaign speeches.
The reality is that the incumbent has a huge built-in advantage in campaigning, not the least of which is that the media generally will pay daily attention to the incumbent. In many races, a challenger HAS to outspend the incumbent merely to level the playing field/get a message heard etc.
