Road Trip: Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington

Joint Base Lewis-McChord, (JBLM), formerly Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base, is a joint United States military installation in Pierce County and Thurston County, Washington, United States. The post is named after Army Captain Meriwether Lewis and Army Air Corps Colonel William Caldwell McChord. The principal Fort Lewis maneuver units are U.S. I Corps, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Brigade and 4th Brigade 2nd Infantry Division; all of which are constituted as Stryker brigades.

 It is also home to 17th Fires Brigade, the 62nd Medical Brigade, the 593rd Sustainment Brigade, the 555th Engineer Brigade, the 42nd Military Police Brigade, the 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, the 11th Signal Brigade, the I Corps NCO Academy, Headquarters, the Western Region Cadet Command, the 1st Personnel Support Group, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), 2d Ranger Battalion, the 75th Ranger Regiment, and Headquarters, 5th Army (West).

On Feb. 1, 2010, Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base became Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) -- one of 12 joint bases worldwide. On that day, JBLM reached its initial operational capability, meaning the installation support functions at Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base began a phased consolidation to Army management under the Joint Base Garrison. The process was complete on Oct. 1, 2010, when JBLM reached its full operational capability and all installation support functions have transferred.

JBLM has more than 25,000 soldiers and civilian workers. The post supports over 120,000 military retirees and more than 29,000 family members living both on and off post. Fort Lewis proper contains 86,000 acres; the Yakima Training Center covers 324,000 acres. JBLM Main & North have abundant high-quality, close-in training areas, including 115 live fire ranges. Additional training space is available at the Yakima Training Center in eastern Washington, including maneuver areas and additional live fire ranges.

In 2009, the former Fort Lewis Regional Correction Facility was remodeled and renamed the Northwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility (NWJRCF). The facility houses minimum and medium security prisoners from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. During the summer months (June, July, August), JBLM North hosts the Leader Development and Assessment Course, a capstone program for the U.S. Army's ROTC program. Also adjacent to the post is Camp Murray (Washington National Guard).

Orion and Anna met at the festival a few years ago, and now they’re married. Anna is tiny, and it always surprises me that she can get such a huge sound from the piano. This is a new piece for me, but Mendelssohn tends to be entertaining.

Lorna is a tiny flutist from Scotland by way of Vancouver, and she’s a delight. David is also from Vancouver, so we have a two-thirds Canadian trio for this piece. This is early Beethoven attempting to channel Mozart.

I heard Inon play at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, and he was impressive. This is a new piece for me.

Jeremy Denk, piano

Jeremy is one of America’s great pianists and the single best lecturer on American composer Charles Ives that I’ve ever encountered. He views me as an amateur and a pretentious fool, so he doesn’t particularly like to talk music with me. But he also treats some of his collaborators as amateurs. Everyone knows that it’s just his personal style, and they’re used to it. When you’re as talented as Jeremy, you have the right to pretty much behave as you want. I found his satirical piece about Sarah Palin at his blog to be offensive, however. This piece is a good example of the modern French style from the Twenties.

Hey there! I was stationed at JBLM (when it was just Fort Lewis) from May of 1985 until I ETSed out of the Army in November 1986. I was part of HHT 3/5th Cavalry, communications section.

Today, my house is about 1 1/2 miles from the eastern edge of JBLM. We see the C-17’s doing their touch-and-go’s and maneuvers, the ocaisional P-3 Orions that the Navy sometimes flies out of there, and we can sometimes hear the weapons fire and occasional artillery fire when the troops practice. Yes...they even do it late at night. Not that I’m complaining...it’s the sound of freedom.

JBLM is my neighbor...and I like it!

Hi Hoagy! Thanks very much for your service to our Nation. I feel much the way you fe3el about Ft. Lewis regarding NNMC Bethesda, now the Walter Reed National Medical Center - joint based Walter Reed Army Medical Center and National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda. My father served there from 1956-60 and 1965-69. I remember walking through the corridors there and sitting in his office as a nine year old.

After my tour in 'Nam, I served there 70-71. We both had the honor of raising the Stars and Stripes there - he as Junior Officer of the Day in the 50's, me as the Chief of the Day in 70 and 71. (By the time I got to NNMC in 1970, the COD watch had devolved on to E-5's and the Chief's were standing the JDO watch.)

Again, thanks for your service - our great Nation needs guys like you now more than ever!
