The Pentagon plans to establish a searchable database of military valor awards and medals, hoping for a technological fix to the problem of people getting away with lying about earning military honors.
Pentagon press secretary George Little said details have yet to be worked out, but the intention is to have a digital repository of records on a range of valor awards and medals going back as far in history as possible.
The move is in response to a June 28 Supreme Court ruling that invalidated a law making it a crime to lie about receiving the Medal of Honor and other military decorations. An authoritative database would make it easier to check on award claims, and perhaps would deter some who would make false public claims.
The high court ruled that the 2006 Stolen Valor Act infringes upon speech protected by the First Amendment.

This should have happened years ago. About 40 or more if I recall correctly. No excuse.
...see how long it takes for Odungo to order the Pentagon to cease and stand down
I was visiting my neighbor several years ago and noticed an award on the wall of his den. I knew he had been in the Army during Vietnam but never knew he was awarded the silver star.
I read the award info and he was indeed a real hero. I always wanted to look it up and read the info in detail.
I worked many years ago for a guy who said that he was on the Son Tay raid. Had stuff all over the walls of his office about his illustrious military career. Later, I found a book that listed everyone connected with that operation, down to the cooks and bakers, and guess who’s name wasn’t on it?
Well I thought, maybe there was an omission. There is also an association for the operation now that we have the Internet, and he isn’t mentioned there, either. Or anywhere else at all.
Bull Simons who ran the Son Tay raid lived near my parentsl They lived in a rural area near DeFuniak Springs, Fl. He raised hogs which is a bit odd for a Jew. My Father once met him at McDonalds.
I met his Son who had a small gun store just inside the city limits of DeFuniak Springs. I traded guns with him a couple of times and he was pleasant but the store did not seem to be doing well,I sold a couple which I could not repair and he said he could. I lived a long way off then and the next time I came home the store was closed.
He did tell me that Carter had tried to get his whole family deported for their rescue of Ross Perot’s men out of Iran.
I also worked with a guy who claimed he played safety for Notre Dame and tackled Hershel Walker. Well I am fairly knowledgeable on sports and he actually looked like he could have. He was about the right size, was strong but not fat and was Catholic.
I later was talking to our supervisor and he asked if I had hear the Notre Dame story. He told me it was made up. Oddly the guy was a great worker.
Thank you for another reason to loathe Carter.
Huh....Ugh........Who? Teddy Roosevelt ??? ... Colonel William B. Kern ????
OH.
I despise and pity those lying about their military service but I don't like the government passing another unenforceable law no matter how well intended.
Maybe then we can figure out how John Kerry and John McCain got their medals!
They both turned out to be cowards in later life.
That happy horse crap is the reason the stupid coward still lives in the crystal palace! He has shown on many occasions that being a POW doesn't make him a hero, it just makes it possible to act as unheroic as possible when elected to public office. You go ahead and hold him on a pedestal, as he screws the rest of us on a daily basis. I'd rather hold him in contempt...
Remember it is the folks that serve and have served that give you that luxury
I’ve served.
Some don’t brag about decorations. It was only this year that I finally got “#2 Son” to admit that he has three Bronze Stars...
