Jesse Jackson Jr. Speculation Continues to Swirl (Doc: Being treated for 'mood disorder')
Roll Call ^ | Wednesday, July 11, 2012 | Emily Pierce and Shira Toeplitz

Under pressure to reveal where he is and what his “ailments” may be, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s doctors released a statement Wednesday night saying he is being treated for a “mood disorder.”

But the statement is unlikely to dampen the speculation about the Illinois Democrat’s mystery medical ordeal, considering the statement gave few details.

The release, sent out by the lawmaker’s spokesman, did not identify his doctor’s name nor the facility at which he is being treated.

The statement read: “Information regarding the Congressman’s treatment is protected by federal law under the privacy provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPPA”). The name of the attending physician and treatment center will not be disclosed in order to protect his continuing privacy. His physician makes the following statement: ‘The Congressman is receiving intensive medical treatment at a residential treatment facility for a mood disorder. He is responding positively to treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.’ In addition, the rumors about him being treated for alcohol or substance abuse is not true.”

The surprise statement came after a day in which the drumbeat for Jackson to divulge more about his medical condition grew louder, as House Democratic leaders joined the call for him to inform voters and his colleagues about his unusual leave of absence.

Oh damn! My radio was fuzzy when I heard this. I thought they said, "NUDE disorder" and figured he was heading down the same road as his randy pop.

Not when he has been elected to serve and speak for the people. If he is a drug addict, remove him. Drugs ARE ILLEGAL. If he has a mental disorder, his decision making is impaired. This goes for any of these guys in DC, right or left.

He’s in a bad mood because he’s out of crack.

He’s toast..he’s facing a tough primary, and she’s gonna win easily...now that key Dem leaders are saying he should tell all. If it’s really something BAD..look for him to resign, rather than spill the beans and lose the primary.

But we don’t know what the issue is. A mood dis-order can be cured with medication and/or counseling. If drug addicted it would depend what the drug is. Not all drugs are illegal. I’m no fan of the man’s politics but I do wish anyone the same rights under the law that I’m supposed to have.

He was a good looking kid, but this might have just taken him off the list for the first REALLY black president.

For whatever it is worth, I read on one of the FR threads a week or so back that JJ Jr. had some kind of surgery (stomach stapling?) for weight loss.

Whether this is fact, I do not know.

But, one of the unpleasant complications of weight loss surgery is excessive alcohol consumption, with addiction a possibility.

Who knows? This is just my speculation. We can hope that we will know, eventually.

Did anyone ever think that the health issues of an elected representative would be none of our business? As if we were mushrooms?

It sucks to be old, and have all one’s illusions about our republic shattered.

Mood Disorder...yeah right

If he was a white GOP....the media would not hesitate to tell us the “real condition”.

And, If it truly was a mental illness...we would have known about it weeks ago. There is much more sympathy for mental illness now than there was years ago

Bipolar disorder can appear out of the blue as someone gets older. Actually, it may have already been there, and he was self-medicating -- either inadvertently or intentionally.

He may have successfully stopped excessive drinking, only to discover that it was covering up a bipolar disorder, and THAT then came out full-force.

I should note that I'm not a doctor, and am certainly not qualified to make a diagnosis like this. But, I watched a good friend go through exactly this scenario.

Someone else suggested that he might be in treatment for severe depression. I think that's also possible, and may have been the result of an intervention after something else triggered it.

mood disorder

Etymology: AS, mod, mind; L, dis + ordo, rank
a variety of conditions characterized by a disturbance in mood as the main feature. If mild and occasional, the feelings may be normal.

If more severe, they may be a sign of a major depressive disorder or dysthymic reaction or be symptomatic of a bipolar disorder. Other mood disorders may be caused by a general medical condition. Mood disorder is a DSM-IV term. Also called affective disorder.
