**Exclusive**

Late Thursday evening, Mitt Romney's presidential campaign launched a new fundraising drive, 'Meet The VP' -- just as Romney himself has narrowed the field of candidates to a handful, sources reveal.

And a surprise name is now near the top of the list: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice!

The timing of the announcement is now set for 'coming weeks'.

MORE

It was Condi who received two standing ovations at Romney's Utah retreat a few weeks ago, and everyone left with her name on their lips.

Rice made an extended argument for American leadership in the world.

Could be a trial balloon designed to neutralize the "boring rich white guy factor" (Hey, he was at least considering a black woman as running mate). However, considering the other choices being bandied about here, this might be a smart move.

Sarah Palin and Allen West would be better choices from a conservative point of view but not likely to happen.

Lot of people here say that Condi voted for Obama and has liberal views but I can't find that anywhere. Can anybody show proof of that? Because I would not support her if she supported Obama.

Condi is unmarried and so that would take away the awkwardness of a "First Gentleman" (or "Second Gentleman")

“And what votes does Rice deliver? Will blacks flock to Romney? Women? Conservatives? Some state or region?”

We only need to pick off 5-6% and it’s over.

“Pick Liz Cheney instead. She also has experience in State Dept, has great poise, and comes across as intelligent and level headed.”

So far I believe she would be the best of those who’ve been mentioned

With the Hispanic explosion in this country, the importance of Florida, and Rubio's ability to speak powerfully...Romney would be crazy not to put him in the top two or three.

And as to Condi's great speeches in Utah? She's preaching to the choir...BFD.

BTW, Condi is an academic...and Romney said he would have no academics in his cabinet. Why would he put one on the ticket itself if he would avoid them in his cabinet?

“That would make the VP debate “must see TV” fer sure.”

That wouldn’t even be fair. Slo-Jo would end up sitting in a corner wearing a hockey helmet and sucking his thumb.

We also have to look at the strategery here. Obama’s campaign is going to accuse Romney of racism for picking a black. Which means Romney would have to ask Condi to leave the ticket which Obama’s campaign will accuse Romney of racism.

She is a vicious baby killer! If he picks her, I’m staying home on election day.

Romney needs to pick someone STRONG in foreign policy. Short of a military person, she is in the know. I set politics aside in this case.

She was very excited, just like Powell.
Links at the end of the story with her interview on CNN, and CBS.

It will be an interesting dynamic between a candidate they don't like and a president they absolutely loathe. If this were Romney versus a Bubba Clinton where the economy doing well, I could see voters staying home. Romney versus Obama in a horrible economy, I don't know how many will sit this one out.

By the way, love the tagline.
