Penn State football needs to be suspended at least two years (calls for the death penalty)
Chicago Sun Times ^ | July 12, 2012 | Rick Morrissey

I want to hear the silence on Saturdays in State College, Pa. I want to experience the hush of an empty stadium. I want to feel the emptiness as an institution serves its penance for putting a football program above the safety of young boys.

Silence in exchange for silence — that’s the price Penn State needs to pay for looking away as a sexual predator ruined lives.

The school needs to shut down its football program for at least two years. Or, if university officials can’t quite locate their humanity, let the NCAA do it for them.

The Freeh Report came out Thursday, and it’s as damning and heartbreaking a document as you’ll ever read. It tells the story of a university so concerned with its reputation that it allowed children to be molested.

Please read that last sentence again. It’s what this whole disgusting mess comes down to. Coach Joe Paterno, athletic director Tim Curley, school president Graham Spanier and vice president Gary Schultz let Jerry Sandusky sexually abuse boys for 14 years.

And for what? So the good name of a university would not be hurt. Excuse me while I vomit.

That good name and that university are so contaminated right now it would take workers in hazmat suits to clean it all up. In lieu of that, we’ll have to settle for more realistic solutions:

† Long prison terms for those who failed the children. Spanier, Schultz and Curley — all of them in inmate coveralls.

† The suspension of a football program for a school that knowingly allowed the abuse to continue for years.

† The destruction of the campus statue honoring a coach who was more worried about protecting his program’s reputation than protecting victims from a monster.

Oh, Joe Pa! Freak’in pervert.

This is going to bust Penn State. The roots run deep and the investigators
will not be paid off or silenced.

A close friend once said collegiate sports are “pure” because the schools and
their athletes don’t do this for money. Unbelievably naive.
of course this comes from a tenured professor. Bwaaahhhaaaaaahaaahaaaa!

It ticks me off that they keep using the term molested...the children were raped....molested doesn’t sound so violent as rape....call it what it is.....scumbags.

What is all the fuss? NAMBLA is busy trying to normalize man on boy sex through the same methods as the radical homosexual lobby normed homosexual behavior. Once they succeed this type of behavior will be a ‘right’ not a crime.
While everyone is screaming about Penn State the NAMBLA lobby is laughing themselves silly.
From wikipedia - The North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) is a pedophile and pederasty advocacy organization in the United States that works to abolish age of consent laws criminalizing adult sexual involvement with minors, and for the release of all men who have been jailed for sexual contacts with minors that did not involve coercion.

Even the living can’t defend the indefensible. Paterno knew and claims he reported it. If so and he still saw Sandusky in the facility he must have known nothing was done. It’s at that point Paterno failed as a human being. He’s guilty. No defense possible.

Indicators that President Sprainer would cultivate a climate conducive to creating an environment determental to non-gay students. The president of the university was a known adherent of sexual deviation(s)....

http://www.collegian.psu.edu:8080/archive/1995/03/03-16-95tdc/03-16-95dnews-7.asp Prior (1995) to employment as President, he was known to be a strong gay rights proponent. “Loudon said Spanier's strength at Nebraska lies in academics, but he is also known as a liberal individual who pushes an aggressive social agenda.” And this “He very much focuses on affirmative action and a pro-homosexual agenda," Loudon said.

From time to time, I will set aside a couple of hours to sit and watch a replay of the '79 Sugar Bowl. I get a sense of satisfaction each time I see a smaller Alabama team beat Paterno, Millen, et al. After that game, Paterno said that he couldn't respect Alabama - that they just got lucky. I have hated Penn State ever since.

I think that a very visible example needs to be made out of the individuals responsible for this. I’m pretty sure that this will be a textbook case for every university administrator in the country for years (decades) to come. Everyone who touched this tar baby should be fired. And, at this point, I’m sure that’s going to happen. Additionally, I’m sure PSU will suffer financially from all that lawsuits.

That being said, PSU is THE flagship public university in Pennsylvania. Its just wrong to penalize the current players and students for crimes they didn’t commit. Punish those responsible, clean house and start with a clean slate, but minimize damage to the university.

I wonder if this is not the tip of a massive Ice-burgh?

1 in 10 guys and 1 in 4 girls is sexually abused. College campuses are target rich for guys like Sandusky. It would not be surprising to find that there is a lot of this going on on many campuses. The same and guilt that accompanies this keeps kids from coming forward.

I hope I am wrong but if this is a much bigger issue than PSU, I hope this opens the door for the light to shine on this darkness.

“The program should absolutely be shut down for a while, at least two years.

I don’t see the NCAA doing that. I don’t see Penn State doing that. It’s all about money.

If SMU deserved the death penalty for cheating, how much more does PSU deserve a punishment 10 times worse....”

I lived in Murphy, TX and would drive by the SMU campus and the whole campus was quiet during their suspension. Like dead.

Considering the severity of PSC inaction while these young boys had their lives changed forever I would easily recommend a permanent revocation of NCAA football status and no revenue from any TV coverage of any sport at PSU.

When the coaches, executives and some board of trustees members closed their eyes to these despicable acts they deserve the most severe punishment possible.

I agree with you. The Big 10 and NCAA will not let a top tier team to be shut down. To much money.

There will be a “special” program before the first game, and then Penn State will pretend it never happened.

This wasn't the first child sex scandal the Penn State president was involved in. He was at Nebraska in the 80’s, when there was all sorts of stuff going on in Boy's Town and other places. He left for Penn State to get away from the rumors.

Spanier has an interesting past.

I might agree with shutting the sports programs down but in the back of my mind I can’t help believing that a lot more schools are equally guilty of the same crime....we just don’t know about it yet.

Nuke Penn St from low orbit, it’s the only way to be sure.

I haven’t watched a football game, pro or college, in 20 years.

I am sure that Joe knew more than he would ever divulge but kept it to himself, based upon his Italian heritage and generation

So am I. His rotting corpse should be dug up, set on fire, and the remains fed to wild dogs. Penn State should be razed so that not a single building is left standing and the ground sown with salt.

Joe could have defended the kids, hence himself, when he found out about sandusky’s crimes and had him arrested fourteen years ago. Even the janitors knew what happened there yet they were scared to report anything for fear of their jobs. I think it is difficult to pretend that a man of of Joe’s position was ignorant to his assisstants’ dalliances.

Do any of you know what kind of environment Joe had to deal with in order to go about his job as a coach?

I'm sorry, but the best that could be said about Joe's dealings with this issue is that in the moments that counted, he may have been too busy and possibly too naive to do what was right. That's the best possible light you can give to a horrible situation.

Unfortunately, the worst possible way to look at it is that Joe actually covered this up with the other top officials to keep Penn State's reputation (and money flow) intact.

The truth may well be in between these two, but even looking at it in the most favorable way is damning for Paterno. The likely reality is it is somewhere in between. The news from the Freeh report is saying the truth leans towards the worst case, and that doesn't say much for JoePa's judgment or character when it mattered for those kids.

I find it amazing the media (and the Freeh Report) isn't saying the obvious: That President Spanier was pro-gay, promised to make the most pro-gay environment in any university, and somehow the media is shocked that this man participated in a cover up of Sandusky's actions.

Right is right and wrong is wrong. Environment, race, heritage, age, reputation, money, etc. do not matter. None of that can ever make a wrong less of a wrong or be an excuse for not doing what is right. That smacks of liberalism.

Either a person has integrity and character to do what is right—no matter what,—or they don’t. Paterno didn’t - sad to say. He could have said something. He could have found another coaching job - there would have been dozens of offers. Instead, he chose his wrong over right. And he knew the choice he was making was wrong. That is obvious from what he said right before he died.

I used to like Penn State and Joe Paterno. I should have known that to be such a long time legend with such a long term success in this day and age came was bought with an awful price. Now we know what that price was. At least we know in part. I am sure there is much we don’t know.
