President Obama has an idea that can bring the contentious gun control debate to an end, in a manner that should be satisfactory to all sides. His idea is "safe, legal, and rare" [1].
Applied here, it means that guns should be safe, legal, and rare ("SLR-guns"). Those of you expecting access to your Second Amendment rights, don't be too bothered by "rare." It is somewhat contradictory, but other "safe, legal, and rare" applications ("SLR-other") experience a near-doubling of their underlying volumes once legality is affirmed.
Before considering the particulars of SLR-guns, we should note our president's reasonable appreciation for already existing laws and rules:
I actually think - I mean, there are laws both federal, state and constitutional that are in place. And I think that this is an area where I think Bill Clinton had the right formulation a couple of decades ago, which is ... safe, legal, and rare. There are a whole host of laws on the books that after a certain period, the interests shift such that you can have some restrictions ... and appropriately so. So there is in fact a set of rules in place ... people still argue about it and still deeply disagree about it. And that's part of our - that's part of our democratic way.
As the president has also sagely observed, we know that "each side will continue to make its case to the public with passion and conviction. But surely we can do so without reducing those with differing views to caricature."
Surely he is right, but we need not fret about the risk of caricature here because SLR-guns is an elegant off-the-shelf answer liberals already support. I expect that, once seriously pondered, it will also gain the favor of staunch Second Amendment-supporting conservatives. Herein, the...

FUBO!
I don’t give a flip what Obozo thinks.
The Constitution clearly states that the right to bear arms shall not be infringed......
“But surely we can do so without reducing those with differing views to caricature.”
When POTUS is a walking, talking joke, caricature comes easily and unbidden.
Guns need to be common if they are going to either deter criminal individuals or governments.
Gun ownership should be a requirement for voting eligibility.

FAST AND FURIOUS IS NOT A D.C. LAW FIRM ... Ann Coulter
Some noteworthy articles about politics, foreign or military affairs, IMHO, FReepmail me if you want on or off my list.
Is this satire or is it written by a bombastic twat? I can’t tell!
There's not much that's funny about the Second Amendment, Fast and Furious and abortion, but Obama was criticized throughout the essay. I'll let you draw your own conclusions, but I did check off on Political Humor/Cartoons when I checked off on "topics" prior to posting the article.
"each side will continue to make its case to the public with passion and conviction.Reducing those with differing views to caricature is therefore inevitable. But surely we can do so without reducing those with differing views to caricature."
Seriously?
"You may not have heard..."
I was busy living under a rock? Are there people that haven't heard about Fast and Furious and Holder being found in contempt?
"President Obama's Justice Department distributed thousands of guns to criminals."
Bad President!
"If we are to fulfill the president's "safe, legal, and rare" dream, this must stop."
Justice Department stop giving guns to Mexican criminals. There! Its simple. And what do you mean this must stop in order to fulfill Obama's dream? HE was the one running the guns in the first place. On Purpose.
"Finally, any further tightening of criminal laws and penalties will reduce the opportunity for the use of guns, making gun incidents even rarer."
What specific criminal laws and penalties are you even talking about here? What are you calling a "gun incident" and why will it become more rare? Are you really just using the word rare here because it is the last word in "Safe, Legal, and Rare" and somehow thats suppose to tie it all together? So confusing!
I still think it must be satire... The entire piece is one contrary, convoluted sentence after the other. Of course, it could be positively brilliant and I am just too daft to understand it correctly. But I doubt it.
Guns ARE safe when used properly and respectfully.
Guns ARE legal according to the Second Amendment and the USSC.
Guns ARE too rare; my gun safe still has empty spaces.
TC
Exactly! TC makes it very clear. And clearly we don't need any of this new S,L,R gun business. We are fine with our safety, legality and rarity" as is.
I’ve explained to my leftist sister that am pro-choice on guns. If she doesn’t want one, she doesn’t have to get one but no one will get between me and my gun shop on the decision for me. It’s a personal matter and the government should not be involved.
And that’s not based on penumbras.
It is obvious satire, look at the source.
He says Obama has a new idea called SLR that will "bring the contentious gun control debate to an end, in a manner that should be satisfactory to all sides".
But "President Obama's Justice Department distributed thousands of guns to criminals."
But ignore that, now that "must stop" so we can "fulfill the president's "safe, legal, and rare" dream".
But ignore that, because "restrictions suggest that SLR-guns is already in place."
And "In fact, today's SLR-guns framework may even be overdone and excessive, potentially meriting an easing of its restrictions".
But then again, ignore that because "SLR-guns is the way forward."!
Such a mess! Thats why I am sure it has to be a joke. Heh!
Think of the scene in Hannibal in which Anthony Hopkins gently but industriously slices very thin slices of Ray Liotta's brain off, sautees them briefly (not overdone! Gently, gently!), and feeds them to Liotta's character with a little chianti.
I think it was what Dr. Lecter called, in Silence of the Lambs, "having an old friend for dinner".
And I think our National Guard armories should provide more storage space for people's crew-served and self-propelled pieces.
Aaaahhh! LOL Lentulusgracchus!
How about making murder and mayhem RARE...by arming all sane American adults?
SLR isn’t that what the Brits used to call the L1A1 inch pattern FN-FAL? If that’s the case fine the more FN-FAL’s out & about the better .
