US Fears Assad Relocating Chemical Stockpiles

WASHINGTON – US officials said that Syria has started to move part of its chemical weapons arsenal out of storage facilities, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

The country's undeclared stockpiles of sarin nerve agent, mustard gas and cyanide have long worried US officials and their allies in the region, the report said.

Western nations have looked for signs amid the rebellion against President Bashar Assad's government of any change in the location of those weapons, believed to be the world's largest stockpile.

American officials are divided on the meaning of the moves of the arsenal. Some fear Assad may want to use the weapons against rebels or civilians, while others said perhaps he is trying to safeguard them from his opponents, the WSJ reported.

US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said: "We repeatedly made it clear that the Syrian government has a responsibility to safeguard its stockpiles of chemical weapons."

Oh....well then....I feel much better. We've made it clear.

Those would be the ones that Iraq never had, according to the other Hussein.

You mean, relocating his WMD’s just like SADDAM HUSSEIN did in ‘02 when you filthy vermin media wouldn’t even acknowledge the possibility?

The double standard is breathtaking.

Is this the same State Dept that IGNORED moving WMD
from Iraq to Syria under Russian control?

How ironic.

Assad may or may not be moving his stockpiles, but a statement from the State Department doesn’t add any information to the mix, other than it is another attempt to whip up the public to support intervention.

The Iraqi WMDS were supposedly moved to Syria by Russian special forces. Now, Russia is sending ships, personnel, and material to Syria....supposedly to guard their base and interests in Tartous.

I'm not trying to go tin foil hat on this, but it does make you wonder.

Send Hans Blix over with hippie vans to drive in big circles. Then everyone will feel good about themselves.

Nah, all those 18 wheelers heading into Syria had art and ganja..not WMD.

While most conservatives worry about the human suffering in Syria and making sure Islamists don’t take over...the left and others are more worried we may finally find out what was in those trucks.

If that were the case, I believe we’d see more reporting about it. So far, it’s only from Reuters, who is citing a WSJ report.

A pathetic attempt by the neo-cons in the war-mongering Obama administration to justify their illegal plans to invade yet another peace-loving Arab country.

So, could any of the chemical WMD have come from the non-existent stockpiles that were never in Iraq?

Those would be the ones that Iraq never had, according to the other Hussein.

Obama likes to boast that he was against the Iraq war from the start. Meanwhile, everyone at the time, including all the top demonRat senators, was convinced that Saddam had WMDs. Obama Hussein apparently couldn't care less if Saddam Hussein had WMDs and would use them against us or Israel. And, you're right, there was good evidence that the Russians transported WMDs into Syria just prior to the war via a truck convoy.

If the weapons are used to combat the islamists and sharia dimwits then I don’t see any downside. It’s the best way to reduce the stockpile.

I wonder if Assad wants to go out in a Blaze of Glory and attack Israel? If I were Israel I would be very tempted to hit his weapons with a preemptive strike.
