Obama Spending on Attack Ads Soars

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama’s campaign has spent nearly $100 million on television commercials in selected battleground states so far, unleashing a sustained early barrage designed to create lasting, negative impressions of Republican Mitt Romney before he and his allies ramp up for the fall.

In a reflection of campaign strategy, more than one-fifth of the president’s ad spending has been in Ohio, a state that looms as a must-win for Romney more so than for Obama. Florida ranks second and Virginia third, according to organizations that track media spending and other sources.

About three-quarters of the president’s advertising has been critical of Romney as Obama struggles to turn the election into a choice between him and his rival, rather than a referendum on his own handling of the weak economy. Obama’s television ad spending dwarfs the Romney campaign’s so far by a margin of 4-1 or more. It is at rough parity with the Republican challenger and several outside GOP-led organizations combined. They appear positioned to outspend the president and his allies this fall, perhaps heavily.

LMAO, Obama is a joke. $100 million spent in TV ads and his poll numbers have gone nowhere. If this is the price he has to pay just to stay afloat he ain't gonna make it.

“Barry, a well spoken black man, was able to get elected to a state office, oddly because he looked for fraud in his opponents voter registrations and got his opponent disqualified from running.”

I have seen a couple of these ads, and they are either outright lies or exagerrations.

He can’t win with crap like what I have seen.

Some of it, like making fun of Mitt for singing America the Beautiful, will backfire. They always over-reach.

We are seeing ever third spot here in NE PA...The belief that if you tell a lie often enough people will think it’s the truth, does not and will not resonate well. The coal miners out of work, related industry suffering, the only gleam of light ANYWHERE in America is happening here with Nat Gas Fracking, and King Bozo Osmosis would LOVE to shut it down...

Yeah, seriously, this seems to be pretty frantic imo. Look, it is SUMMER TIME for goodness sake.

Only freaks like us are paying attention to politics. Obamugabe is spending millions to hit people and what’re the people doing? Trying to enjoy SOME of their summer despite the miserable economy.

And by the way, most people don’t blame Romney for the economy. They blame Obamugabe.

Actually he could. He's done it before. You only know the truth because you pay attention. There are a lot of uninformed idiots that vote.

Yes but it's the freaks that do not pay attention to politics like we do who see these ads while watching American Idol who are the target. Unfortunately, they vote.

“Defining” (ie. destroying) the competition is how Obama has won all his elections. It’s the Chicago way. Only the most ignorant voters would fall for this tactic, but then, that is the Democrat base.

Anchors have a lot of inertia. That's what the Obama re-elect campaign is, a giant boat anchor.

Obama will run attack ads with no major problems. The MSM will tell us when he runs major lies, but they will not follow through with the usual relentless, top-of-the-news, daily pounding the Repubs would get.

But Romney, now that he has started to fight, will be accused of “negative campaigning.”

Romney needs to geer up his ads to counter this, especially in swing states like Ohio. The massive early advertisements defining his opponent was one of the key things that Clinton did in 96. By the time the fall campaign rolls around, both sides will be all over the airwaves and it will be hard to move the poll numbers either way over the last few months.

Romney didn’t hesitate to go very negative, very early against his conservative opponents and he needs to use his warchest now to go after Obama aggressively over the summer. For the most part, Romney is doing well in polls in swing states, but the numbers I’ve seen in a couple Ohio polls lately are frightening - showing Obama with close to a 10 point lead there. A republican simply cannot with without Ohio. Obama knows this and has visited Ohio over and over again.

I cannot believe that I’m to the point of wanting Romney to win this badly - but the alternative is so much worse.

I think Obama may be suffering under the delusion that "The Chicago Way" may work in his presidential re-election campaign. By repeated suggestions about Romney being "a felon" it may be that he thinks that he can actually knock Romney out of the campaign like he did when he broke into those sealed divorce records during his senatorial campaign. Obama can't beat anybody (except McLame) without cheating.
