The concept that the government could or should only “allow” certain people to buy guns stands the very concept of American jurisprudence on its head. It presumes that the government knows all, controls all, and should be doing so. It is wrong and ineffective. It is the opposite of preventing criminals from possessing guns.

It is crazy to set up a huge expensive bureaucratic system, require everyone to jump though hoops and prove that they are *not* criminals in order to try, ineffectively, to prevent the few individuals who are not responsible, from having legal access to guns. This is a failed paradigm, and it should be abandoned. To accept the idea that the all gun sales should be monitored by the government, and only allowed to those it deems satisfactory is fundamentally wrong.

The entire idea of the enterprise has always been the death of a thousand cuts, where the restrictions on who can buy, and where, and how and what are continually increased until the number of gun owners is reduced to political insignificance.

These Chiefs are anti-Bill of Rights and should be removed from office.

This appears to be an end-around attack on gun shows.

Will the same people calling for stricter controls submit to themselves to that?

Vendors at gun shows already do checks. The “federal legislation that would require buyers in private gun sales to undergo a background check” would require ALL transfers, including among family members, to be subject to background check (and thus, effective registration).

Of course the criminal selling guns in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven will use his government provided iPhone to run his potential clients through the background check. ;-/

Fundamental principle here. So simple even a liberal should be able to understand it (stick with me here lib-lurkers). Criminals, by definition of being a criminal, break laws. I know that may be a ground-breaking revelation to you, but just stop and consider it for a moment. Not too long though, I don't want you to hurt yourself.

Therefore, the easily reached conclusion based on that simple fact is that passing more laws won't stop criminal activity. In fact, it will increase it. All you'll really do is make some formerly law abiding citizens into criminals because they will choose not to obey foolish laws. You will also prevent some law abiding citizens from exercising their freedoms.

Ah, perhaps that is the true intent here, no? The real intent of such efforts isn't to reduce crime, it is to prevent certain behaviors and remove capabilities that the would-be fascists don't want the masses to have.

require buyers in private gun sales to undergo a background check.

I don't see how that would be possible without registration.

What union concessions is this dip-wad trying to purchase. Police Chiefs are supposed to be enforcing the laws, not making new ones to suit their little power fantasies.
It’s about time the people start making that clear to the politicians who hire them.

Vendors who hold a retail firearms license require a background check.

It would require all private purchases be done through a firearms dealer. If I wanted to buy my neighbors AR-15, we'd have to go to a dealer to handle the paperwork. And the dealer would charge $15+.

Police chiefs don’t say anything political without first knowing that it will be liked by the boss(the mayor). This crap comes from the mayor, in other words.

How are these idiots elected/appointed to police chief?

It seems those that advocate this junk should be fired on the spot.

As mamelukesabre pointed out at #13, the police chiefs are the sock puppets of the mayor who appointed them. They say what the mayor tells them to say, so that the mayor does not directly get the heat.

I wish I knew how to find that guy..

Reliably informed as I am that I would pass such permit/background checks easily, I decided some time ago I would never buy another gun in a way that required me to ask the Government for permission.
